50 Proprietary applications and their Open Source alternatives

Some of these are obvious, IE>FireFox, Windows>Ubuntu. But others, I've only a passing familiarity with. Still, its a good list for those looking to make the jump permanently to Linux.

Edit - I should also note that a lot of these applications are for Windows as well.

Ha. Ha! AHAHAHAHAHA! That's like going from a Buick to a bicycle - a bicycle with a bent wheel no less! The closest Windows equivalent to Avidemux is VirtualDub - except that Avidemux crashes more.

Why? I'm using Skype on Linux right now.

The list is for open source alternatives, not necessarily those that run on Linux. You can have proprietary code on an open source OS, its done all the time. Skype on Linux is proprietary code.

Pretty much all of that article reads like it was written by some 16 year old Linux fanboy who thinks it is cool to bash Microsoft. Many of those open source alternatives listed are an order of magnitude less functional than the proprietary ones they are compared to.

Agreed. And also, this is partly why people who have CS degrees are getting paid less and less.

Agreed.
People that purchased a computer do not often upgrade their OS.

Those that had XP were deluged with horror stories about Vista and then found out that their H/W would not support W7. So why upgrade?

Many will not upgrade to a newer OS unless there is a must have app and/or new hardware that will not work under the existing OS.

OVer the last eight years, ALL clients that I have had, use XP as there corporate OS.

People will stick with what they are familiar with and what works. Open Source may be great for those that want to experiment around; but if it can not do what one is expecting, the experienced/professional or novice user will have no qualms about going back to the familiar warmth of the commerical package that they are used to.
