I bought a $310 24-port 10/100 switch for a LAN party I was having a givin weekend.. the switch worked out wounderfully (too bad it wasn't a manageable switch 🙁 ) At the end of the party, I had made up my mind to keep it (its not too hard to 'rent' hardware from these large computer places). The only place I could house the switch was in my room.. however, the 40mm fans were too loud for my dainty little ears in the still of the night, so I eventually returned it.
At the returns, the representaive taking returns held onto the box in such a way that allowed the cover to rip all the way down, resulting in a very unappealing box to look at. I got my $310 back, reguardless.. A few weeks later, I was roaming the store and saw my switch there all taped up and badged with the 'refurbished' tag bearing the price of $164.95.. With a grin, I picked it up and bought it.. again.
I had no idea it was going to work out the way it did, however, I am pleased by the entire incident. I was under the impression that refurbished hardware when't for the same price as retail...
