Damn I wish I lived in this town:
Monticello

In my area the local cable company basically sucked in terms of throughput and service, until FIOS came to town and all of a sudden they upgraded everybody's connections for free. Just another example of how competition is good for the consumer.

I hear you. My choices are AT&T (Bellsouth) 6meg DSL @ $45 a month or Charter 20meg @ $80 a month ($10 more if you don't use their TV or phone service) :(

They just rolled it out our muni-fiber so hopefully prices will improve in the future:
15/15 57.99
20/20 69.99
50/50 174.99

If your town is really unlucky, the incumbent will just head right to the state legislature, seeking to pass laws constraining the practice. That's what happened to Wilson, North Carolina, which runs a moderately famous 100Mbps system known as Greenlight (which just happens to be the fastest ISP in the entire state).

When Time Warner Cable (which still tops out at 10Mbps and no DOCSIS 3.0) was asked why it had not stepped up to meet the city's demand for faster access, a company rep told TechJournal South that it hadn't actually heard a citizen outcry over the issue?or it would have acted.

Wilson's Internet manager is having none of it. "We don?t want to run anyone out of business," he said, "but we also don?t want to take the leftover table scraps. If they had offered us what we were asking for, next generation good service, we would have happily stepped aside."

i wish my town could get something like this. Comcast has really been crappy lately. I usually get 10mbps but lately, Im barely topping 5mbps....sometimes going as low as 1mbps

In my home town, Wayne, NJ I can get Verizon DSL, but only at 1.7MBS since I am at the end of the distance limit from the central office for DSL to be any faster. Cablevision has thier Optimum On Line, but I don't want to pay their higher (almost $50 after the first year) prices. And some of my email addresses, like at Verizon.net would need to change along with the router. Verizon has not yet offered FIOS in my area and I don't know if I would want their TV service (it is nice though) with the requirement for a 2 year contract. But their higher internet speed might be nice.

Who cares now that torrents are basically gone? What websites allow you to download anywhere near your max speed?

I haven't had latency in any video game since my 384 DSL days...

40/5 for $100 available, altho only took 20/5 for $50.

Lesson learned, if you want your telco to offer ridiculously fast speeds, get your town/city to start building a fios network themselves...

Comcast did the same thing here to (unsuccessfully) try to stop the city from deploying its own fiber

You guys don't know how good you've got it.

1.5/768 here and it's nearly $70 per month.

I had sort of kept up with the drama in Monticello, but I didn't realize that TDS was building their own fiber network. Makes things pretty interesting, as the article points out, the city's feasibility study didn't consider that they'd have to compete with another FTTH provider. Could really throw a wrench in their plans. Maybe TDS is hoping to force the city to sell off their network.

The FCC decides on it in just a couple weeks.
Want to bet the big money corporations win out ?
