$50 gift card to spend at Borders

I've got an old $50 gift card for Borders and want to buy something with it before they go out of business. Recommend me a good book (or a few).

I wanted to get this: http://www.borders.com/online/store/...sku=0071742557
but they're charging full price - $60 so it's a no-go.

Recommend me some good fiction or non-fiction.

The last non-fiction book I read was George Friedman's "The Next 100 Years..."

The last fiction book I've read was "Day by Day Armageddon."

How about some sci-fi?

think your screwed once they filed BK, they wiped out all the GCs

You had me shaken for a minute there. I just checked and verified that my gift card is still good. Damn, the prices at their Internet site are sky high, though. They're charging full retail + shipping + tax.

The website isn't discounted. The stores are.

Its not discounted very good yet. It's only about 20%, and they're not sending out those 40% coupons anymore...

But eventually things will drop lower than Amazon et al, then is the time to move. I got some sci-fi books and software/hardware books for about 20% less than what Amazon was asking. And a giant jug of soap and bathroom cleaning wipes too. Hoping to score a soap dispenser this time around.

Yeah and it isn't that much better in store. I stopped by a store today and the prices for books are still more expensive than Amazon. Music was at a decent price with 40% off.

It's a disorganized mess in the stores too. I went over the weekend - bargain books were 20% off, so that wasn't bad, and magazines were 40% off, so I managed to find a few cooking magazines I like.

Naomi Klein "The Shock Doctrine", Matt Taibbi "Griftopia", Howard Zinn numerous books, Chris Hedges "War is a force that gives us meaning", for a few.

i actually have a $50 gift card for borders as well. i got it from my bank when they made a error in one of my accounts. im pretty sure that once the liquidators take over, those cards cant be used anymore. i couldnt use it anyway, all the borders in san francisco and contra costa closed months ago

spend it on a book that teaches you how to traffic found cocaine, without getting killed.

please report back to ATOT.

Well if you have no use for it....

(The Borders in Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are still open...)

In the months before they filed for bankruptcy, they offered 40% off any one item via the website numerous times, and that's when I used my giftcards. Now that they are packing it in, the good deals seem to be gone.

"The Gone Away World" by Nick Harkaway is excellent.

I stopped by Borders the other day and with their 20% discount, Amazon was still cheaper.

This one looks interesting and challenging. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

This book is awesome. Really really tells a lot about the situation back then, and answers tons of questions. The amount of content contained in this book is amazing.

Looks interesting and heavy. Maybe next time.

Naomi Klein "The Shock Doctrine", Matt Taibbi "Griftopia", Howard Zinn numerous books, Chris Hedges"War is a fo rce that gives us meaning", for a few.

The Shock Doctrine looks like a great read. I'm getting it. I saw the documentary on TV (I think it was PPV) last year and it was good. Can't wait to read this. Thanks!

Griftopia looks good. It's got a lot of good reviews on Amazon too. I'll get this too.

"War is a force that gives us meaning" looks a bit heavier than what I had in mind for summer reading. I'll put it on the list for next time.

THANKS!

Still works on the Internet site. You'll pay full retail even for what sells as bargain books at other stores though. No deals on the website.
