50 Degrees C OK for 1Ghz T-Bird?

I get around 51 degrees C after playing games for awhile on my T-bird. Is this temperature safe? Also, do software coolers work? What do they do? Disable the CPU when it's idle? Are they worth using?

CPU Idle Programs execute a HLT command the cpu when its not being used. They won't lower temps during games.

What mb/heatsink are you using? What is your ambient case temp?

Philly, you using the PC probe that came with your motherboard? I got the same thing and my system would run stable muchhigher than that, even though i wasn't happy about it. I have an 800 by the way. I fixed my little problem by running with the case opened (dropped from above 60 c to 54 c) and then rigging a fan to blow right in between my AGP card and cpu (dropped from 54 c to 48 c). I'm much happier with it now. T'birds can take quite a bit of heat, i think that somethinglike 85 c is the max rated heat but i could be wrong, may be in the 70's or something but getting a reading in the 60's worried me. Don't listen to some people that say they got like a 30 c t'bird, that's not true, they have inaccurate thermsistor and you and i do too. Use that reading to compare to when you make changes to see if it was for the better orthe worse.

Mine goes to 53°C when doing heavy stuff. AMD supplied heatsink. If it doesn't crash, then its not a problem. Might need to improve things if you start overclocking to make it stable, but until then.
