.50 Cal BMGs

I am in the market for a .50 caliber rifle. I was hoping for an M107 Barrett, but after seeing the price tag, I refuse to purchase a gun that is double the price of my car. The Armalite AR50 on the other hand, is more in the price range I can afford ($3400). A Serbu is also a good choice for pricing and reliability (according to sources), so I would like more opinions on this matter.

So I ask you this, what is your opinions on .50 cals? Brands vs brands? Ammo? Everything. I wish to know all I can before Monday when I get paid again because there is an Armalite BMG sitting at a pawn shop and I wish to put it on layaway, but it costs $909 of my non-refundable dollars to do so and I would like to be as informed as possible before blowing my entire paycheck on something I might regret buying (Vulcan anyone?).

I don't have any answers, but I'm curious as to why you want a .50

Trying to take down some light armor??? You'll have some FBI agents knocking on your door in a couple minutes.

I am unsure of that myself, but I am buying one. I have access to a very large cache of ammunition, so I won't be paying $5 per shot anytime soon. I already own a .308 and a .223, both semi-auto and sighted accurately to 600 yards. I wish for something that can reach past that as well as a multitude of other reasons.

To each his own. It seems like a hell of a lot of money for an amusement to me.

The Barrett M107 semi-auto magazine-fed is $11,000 whereas the Armalite AR50 is only $3,400. I could buy a Vulcan which has been nicknamed "The pipebomb" due to it's faulty mechanics for only $1,300, but I would like to survive shooting this weapon.

So an Armalite AR50 and Serbu ($2,691.99) are both within my price range.

I'm marking this thread so I can see what happens when the OP goes all crazy on us.

I am going to be making some videos when I actually have the rifle. If conditions are right, I shall post them here if anyone is interested. Probably just videos of me sighting the rifle, but my roommate wishes to see what a .50 cal does to a full propane bottle 500 yards away from us. Either it will explode, or there will just be a giant hole through the middle. Either way, things of the sort will be recorded.

Bro boss, you need the .50 cal. Honestly when 2012 dawns and the Nibiru attack us with their titanium moon armor only 0.50 cal will do the trick.

Might as well be prepared, right?

And it looks like I am going to be picking up a Serbu rather than wait the four months for an AR-50 considering I could just save up all the money spent on the AR during the four month wait and splurge on the M107 straight from Barrett.

Preperation is key. A month before December 2012 I'm buying myself an F-350 Diesel with giagantic terrain tires so I can make the run up north through the Canadian wilderness and hide in a cave I have already pinpointed on google.

Now you're thinking! I just hope your cave isn't near mine, lest I become a bit paranoid and usurp yours.

But back on track, I am trying to decide between the AR-50 (still need to find a retailer for them) and the Serbu. Going to go with Factory warranty and the Serbu is much cheaper and comes with a better warranty, plus it is in stock right now.

Crazy expensive to shoot, I don't see a reason to buy one other than hoping for appreciation. Economically that gun makes no sense for anyone that wants to shoot is - the use case for the round is unexploded ordinance and taking out APCs, neither of which you'll be doing.

If you want the adrenaline rush, go join the military, because that's what it looks like you're after. That or small peenus compensation, kinda like buying a hummer.

Or dating a girl with an expensive car...

Christ, for someone who constantly seems to be bragging about one penis extending thing or another, you're hardly someone to criticize the OP.

How the hell would someone else's car in someone else's garage extend my peeenus? By your logic, every time I see a lambo on the road, it expends my epeen...

And regardless of that issue, 50 BMG round is useless for all practical purposes.

If he wants to shoot a .50 Cal BMG it has nothing to do with his manliness or supposed lack thereof. A gun doesn't make you more or less manly.

You've said you already own a .338 Lupa. Sighting that at 600 yards is a waste, it's good ot at least 800 yards, and anything over that BMG or 338, it's all up to the shooter anyways. The .50 ballistics might be somewhat straighter, but the Lupa is effective to at least 1000 yards, 1200-1300+ if you are really skilled, with a decent gun. A 50BMG would extend your range to maybe 2000 yards, but at that range, it really end up being a crapshoot without extreme skill.

As for Serbu or Armalite, I would personally go for the armalite, the specs on that gun look better (not regarding the switch between 30" and 36" barrel, but that should not be a big deal).

Where did he say that?

I'd guess a 338 lapua would be a good alternative or the .416 barrett... but if you have access to a lot of cheap .50, well, there ya go.

seriously if the price tag of the weapon is a shocker, do you plan on firing it much?
