50*C!!! HELP!!!

Ok... here are the specs (as far as I know):
Asus a7a266
AMD T-bird @ 1gig
Volcano 6cu CPU fan
256 megs DDR
40 Gig WD 7200 rpm
Geforce GTS 64 meg
TDK 16x10x40
Pioneer 16x dvd
Sound Blaster Live
10/100 Lan

I have 2 case fans (one generic, one thermaltake 38 cfm) in a mid-tower case. I don't know the case brand (ie. cheap). I certainly hope that I'm just getting a false reading, but this sucker is running HOT! What can I do to get temps down to a more 'normal' level?

that is a "normal" temp for an asus mb. You can't cross compare temps with different mb's. Asus compensates their socke-tthermistor readings to better represent actual core temp, and often times the asus temps are closer to "real" than others seem to be.

No worries, mine runs @ 80C (yes C) when the case is closed. That's why I'm going water cooling.

OK... so what's the upper limit on temps? How hot can it get before I start expecting a meltdown?

I had a problem with high temps and it turned out that the bios was causing a problem. Went and looked at the latest ver and even though it said nothing about the problem when I updated my temps dropped 8C which is more in line with what it should have been.

BTW I think there has been an issue with Thermaltake's specs being overly generous.

on an Asus board, I'd say 35C or so over ambient case temp. So around 60-65C probably, adjusted for your case temp.

I have a 1ghz tbird on an asus a7v and it runs at around 60c. that's normal on an asus mobo

You're temp is not out of control. You're still in spec for the cpu, if you want extra cooling, you may consider using ASII, or replacing the HS with something nicer. (An SK-6 or an Alpha) You could also lap your current HS. I wouldn't bother though, if the machine is stable, then don't worry.

hey cavalier.......i have the exact same hsf....running my 1.2 at about 52c...first day install....should go down alittle in a week or so.....im saying the volcano 6cu ..with those temps are average...not takin in to account your temps in room..case flow..o/cing....ect..
i say live with it there or go with a better hs.......(swiftech 462)...and better case flow.......for better temps

i tend to notice the bios giving out at least 5 extra degrees

but since they don't tend to work well with creative soundcards i have sold mine

interesting temps...

my athlon 1.2 ran around 30C with a volcano 2 and a single 120mm case fan... 38c without the case fan. Now it runs 48-50C with the alpha/papst (19.5cfm) and no case fan.
