5-Star Prison

Austria is basically crime-free. The crimes that are committed are often non-violent crimes.

I can see how a prison such as this would better rehabilitate people. Prisons in the US breed violent criminals. That prison might actually rehabilitate since inmates are given more freedom.

Wow, those cells are pretty roomy. If you're down on your luck, or just lost your house it seems committing a crime to land in that jail would make a lot of sense.

It looks institutional, but comfy. It'd be like staying at a hospital long term. Not ideal, but I could think of worse places to be.

You are not in prison to enjoy yourself and have a good time.

Prisons were not built for rehabilitation. They were called penitentiaries for a reason. It was the religious mindset that people who committed crimes need to pay penitence.

If I could re-design prisons I would change it to be more like a forced education. You get out only when you complete a 4 year degree. Education is the way to rehabilitate people, not locking them up like a dog.

True, but what does that have to do with what he said?

When you compare a minimum-security prison in Austria to a maximum-security prison in America (and the prisons shown on TV and in movies are almost always maximum-security) it's only natural that you would have that impression.

The minimum-security prisons I've seen have looked, for the most part, like community college campuses. Sure, they aren't as artistically-modern as the one in the OP's link, but they're not the dank, dark prisons that we see on TV and in movies.

True.
There is a min security prison not far from me. It consist of a single fence, topped with razor wire, one guard tower and the whole area is just grass and sidewalks with mobile home like trailers for the convicts. They come and go outside when they like, they even have picnic tables where they can eat outside if they like.

Yea, I have to wonder if Austria doesn't have a different facility for super violent offenders. Having a pyscho bubba in that nice Austrian facility doesn't seem logical, considering all the glass and stuff.

Images of Graz-Karlau seem to be more "traditional" to our idea of prison.

Notable inmates

Among the prison's inmates, it houses or housed prisoners such as the serial killer Jack Unterweger, the letter and pipe bomb terrorist Franz Fuchs, the six-times murderer Udo Proksch, the suspected serial killer Wolfgang Ott, or the terrorist Tawfik Ben Chaovali who was involved in the Rome and Vienna airport attacks.
