5 reason the liquidation sales suck

The prices aren't that good: When people hear the words "liquidation sale," they assume the main purpose is to get rid of merchandise quickly, meaning cheaply. While moving the inventory is one goal, it's not the primary goal. The main point is to make money.

I got really excited when CompUSA stores were closing. I kept going back hoping to find some kind of deal...I never did.

Here's a lesson.

The business of business is to make money. Thank me later.

I went when the local one here closed down, I bought a pair of headphones for like 30% off (whoppiee).

I go home come to find out I paid the same price as most online retailers, wow.

I spent 20 minutes last weekend figuring out that there weren't any prices lower than 10% off in the whole Circuit City.

When you could have spent 5 seconds reading the sign on the front of the store. You sound brilliant.

Hey they're not all bad. I scored 20 150 GB Raptors today from the company that used to share a building with mine. Got a great price.

You don't need it: If you heard about a liquidation sale where a company is selling some type of gadget and now you find yourself wanting one, you did exactly what the liquidator wanted you to do. If you really wanted the gadget, it would have been on your list, after all.

The first rule of smart shopping is that, if you don't need it, it's not a bargain no matter what the price. Liquidation sales are a good way to convince yourself that a want is within reach, and therefore a need.
If stuff is 90%+ off the regular price, what I "need" can become rather flexible.
Unfortunately, sales like that are rare.

Why would they start that way? If there are people that will buy at 10% off they're throwing money away by jumping straight to 90%. When 90% hits there will be nothing but leftovers.

I haven't been into that thread since the first day.

If this is a repost....lock'r up

I remember at the crapusa sale looking at the software isle (about the only stuff left by the time the hit everything 40-50% off which is kinda sad that people bought so much before then), and found a SOE gamecard marked with a msrp for $5 more than if you bought it from sony. Gonna take a big discount to actually make it a deal in that case.

Woah do you have like an MBA or something?!?!

Except the sign out front said this:

Of course - it does say "up to" which can mean exactly one item in the store is at 30% off, while the rest of the store is 10% off.

Another thing liquidators do is the mark up the price then cut the new updated price by the 10% off, resulting in a product costing more than originally.

Up-to. There are other signs all around the store saying TV's are 10% off, blah blah. Someone else mentioned Monster cables are 30% off.

Monster cables could be 80% off, and they would still make a profit on the damn things.

When I went to the CompUSA store that was closing near my house, I found a bunch of printing supplies like the big address labels. I think I got those for about 99 cents per package. Everything else was still right at or close to retail though.

Setup a 3TB RAID-0 array with them. Don't worry about 1 of the drives failing.
