$5+ per bottle tax on wine in CA? How long does wine keep?

OK, thanks for the patient explanation. I meant no racial slur, it was just meant to be a playful, whimsical play on words based on your screen name here, nothing more. I have no clue what your particular ethnicity or ethnicities might be, and even if I did it wouldn't be like me to mock you based on that.
No need for an apology. I appreciate it though. We're good.

Screw tops are better for keeping wine. Professionals are pushing for a transition to screw tops due to the hassle, and failures of cork.

Then there's the endless debate if wine will age the same w/out the little bit of air corks allow in- and the whole 'romance' of pulling a cork...
Personally I'm all for screw tops- nothing worse than popping that special occasion bottle you've been holding on to for a few years and have it be tainted

$10.60 tax/gallon. That's a $164 tax for a keg 😱 😱

That is so over the top. Why waste time/money on something that will never pass?

Think of the opportunities for organized crime if that ere to pass. That would almost be a mini prohibition amendment. I can see it now. Gangsters trucking in bootleg alchohol selling it with no tax but at twice it's normal retail which would still be significantly cheaper that normal retail with the tax.

Isn't 2 buck chuck actually 3 buck chuck now? I stocked up recently.. yum.

depends on yoru market. I always paid 3 bucks for it when i was living in Chicago. Last time I bought it out here in CA (maybe 1 year ago?) it was 2 bucks + CA tax

...and $5 per bottle tax on wine? No way that shit can pass. Can't see the #1 tourist destination on the West Coast (Napa/Sonoma) being too happy about that...

Also, the cork can be bad if it's real cork. I've had some that go bad then ruin the bottle.

Unless you're buying wines that are designed to keep (hint: el-cheapo wines do not fall into this category), I wouldn't go over 6-12 months on the high end. That's just my opinion, and if you're buying multiple cases then drink bottles on a regular basis and once you notice it's not tasting quite right... Time to through a party 🙂

Haha. Cabernet sauvignon is by far the varietal I drink most. I have maybe about 3/4 a case of Silver Oak, Clos du Val, and Groth cabernets from the mid to late 1990's which is only reserved for special occasions because they all go for $100+ a bottle. Most of the other cabernets I have are from the 2000's and on a typical weekend night I might drink something from the mid 2000's. I've never had a problem with older cabernets going bad unless air got into them. I can tell instantly when a wine has gone bad, because while uncorking it the cork will feel very mushy to the corkscrew and once you pull it out it will be soaked through about half way (or sometimes all the way). The wine will even smell terrible. I haven't found this happen with any of the stuff I have dated 2000 or later, but it may be bound to happen in 5-10 years, who really knows.

Every year my dad brings out a few nice bottles from his collection around the holidays. For the last couple of years he has brought out some reds from Freemark Abbey circa 1992-1993 and it is unbelievably good wine.

Wine can be kept for many many years under the right conditions, cool, dry, dark place but it most certainly does not stay good forever.

depends. Only very few reds should actually be kept more than 10 years. Contrary to popular belief, the lasting power of a lot of red wine does not go beyond 15 years. There are a few rare cases, such as one wine maker in the Chianti region that cracked open an original vintage (3 years ago, I think?) that was ~120 years old, and was reportedly quite good.

Whites should be consumed at younger ages, though.

This would never happen in Washington, there are just too many breweries and wineries and it seems like the state supports them.

uh, same here, of course. I mean, to think WA has more wineries than CA is a bit..well odd? (I know you didn't suggest that, of course)

Like I mentioned earlier, Napa is the top tourist destination in the state, based on weekly visits. I don't see this preposterous tax passing. I don't mind a wee bit more tax, but 5 dollars?? wtf.

Though I also agree with Boomer's argument. People only care when it affects them. Too much stigmatism projected towards strangers. Smokers and smoking doesn't really bother me, at all. I like that it's taxed, I like that booze is taxed, but I freaking hate the little bitches that walk down the street and cough obnoxiously when they pass a smoker--especially if they're fatties. Tons of that crap here in Berkeley, lol.

They should just legalize marijuanna and tax it like they tax cigarettes.

* Crime goes down
* state budget shortfall is filled
* regular people being arrested for possession stop having to worry all the time.

Of all the reasons people diss California, our proposition system is the most legitimate. Anyone can get some crazy idea on the ballot and hide it with a phony cause. Not only that, but these ballot measures have made the budget problems even worse because often times they regulate funding or the state budget in some way. This will get voted down but every election there are a few crazy ballot initiatives like these. This is the last weird one to pass: http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/California_Proposition_2_(2008)

totally agree. prop system + 2/3 majority = broken system.

Good lord that tax is insane. Luckily it won't pass.

A "wino" wouldn't know. A wino wouldn't have wine around long enough to know. Who's a wino and who isn't can be a matter of opinion. See the aforementioned Sideways. As for myself, I can't afford to be an afficionado of fine or even middling wine. I'm buying the cheapest stuff around. Don't drink more than around 6 oz. a day. Don't always do that... However, at over a buck for 6 oz. I'd be discouraged from drinking any.

Sideways was a terrible, terrible movie.

Yeah, that's what I used when I made plum wine and it was over 30 years ago. I had many screw top bottles. Don't have them anymore. I'll start scrounging around for them and stop throwing them away.

Just make some rotgut like my Grandpa used too.
I've never made the hard stuff, just some plum wine once. I drink it as much for the health benefit of the flavonols as for the taste and/or high. I'm just hoping they don't tax the shit out of cheap red wine. Seems unfair to jack up the cost of a $2 bottle of wine the same $5 as a $40 bottle of wine. I do doubt it will happen.

From the above linked initiative:

(b) On all still wines containing not more than 14 percent of absolute alcohol by
volume, twenty-five dollars and sixty cents ($25.60) per wine gallon and at a
proportionate rate for any other quantity.

🙄 Bought the DVD. I've seen it twice and thought it great both times. No, I wasn't high.

Good for you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I thought it was one of the most inane, boring, frustrating movies I've ever watched.

Somehow, I bet when they calculated how much that would bring in they didn't factor in the plunge in sales that would cause.

I've had similar experiences watching movies others said they thought great. Hard to say who's the winner there.

He is since Sideways is one of the worst movies I have ever sat through. Everyone that watched it with me thought the same thing. Absolutely terrible.

On topic....I kind of wish CA would pass this as it is very entertaining watching that state fail. CA is overpopulated with people that cannot see the unintended circumstances created by their desires or the dumb ways they try to implement them...or maybe they really are just clueless.
