$5+ per bottle tax on wine in CA? How long does wine keep?

OK, I'm drinking 2 buck chuck. Hard times. I saw on the news tonight that there's a ballot initiative (gonna require 300,000+ signatures) that will add $6 to a six pack of beer and (I think they said the tax now is 18 cents?) and over $5 to a bottle of wine (currently the tax is 4 cents per bottle!). They said that it's estimated that this will put 6-8 billion dollars per year into the state's coffers.

So, I figure maybe I should buy several cases of my 2 buck chuck and store them. How long can I expect it to be drinkable? 😱

If they proposed something less ridiculous (maybe a $1 tax/bottle or pack) it would have a chance on passing. This won't make it.

only if you let the cork dry out. keep it on it's side in the basement and it outlasts you.

Yup, I store mine on it's side. I saw Sideways, one of my favorite movies! :awe: I think even so, wine can go bad. I don't think it's an exact science.

Wow, the ignorance in this thread is STRONG.

If you are buying cheap wine, you won't want to drink it after around 5 years even if stored correctly.

I think a lot of it depends on the exact wine. Some get worse, some stay the same, and some get better. You'd have to ask a wino though. I don't really drink wine.

what does a individual need to put up a ballot initiative? i guess nothing really. no way that would pass though.

heh go create some completely outlandish one and end up on the news.

For a good bottle of cabernet sauvignon or the like stored in optimal conditions, the wine makers typically say you can keep it 10-15 years. There are a lot of things that can go wrong though. If the bottle wasn't corked right, air can seep in and ruin the wine, blips in temperature can ruin it, etc. It really depends. A lot of wineries will allow you to bring the bottle back to them for a replacement if it's gone bad. Best you can do is ask them how long they recommend keeping the bottle before popping it open because different wines and winemakers have different beliefs. For two buck chuck, I wouldn't bother keeping a bottle of that around longer than a few months. 😛

Also, the cork can be bad if it's real cork. I've had some that go bad then ruin the bottle.

Unless you're buying wines that are designed to keep (hint: el-cheapo wines do not fall into this category), I wouldn't go over 6-12 months on the high end. That's just my opinion, and if you're buying multiple cases then drink bottles on a regular basis and once you notice it's not tasting quite right... Time to through a party 🙂

The 300,000 signatures (all have to be qualified) will only get the measure on the ballot. Since this is for a new tax, will it only require 50%+1, or will it require a 2/3 majority?

Actually if it does get to the ballot, I'll vote for it and hope it passes.

As a smoker, I'm tired of non-smokers voting for cigarette/tobacco taxes because it won't cost them a dammed dime. In the past 10 years, the price of cigarettes has nearly tripled...almost all due to increased taxes.

I rarely drink, so this one won't cost me much...

Beautiful! I want to see everything taxed as much as tobacco is. Maybe all these fuckers that didn't care because it didn't affect them will start developing some ethics.
