5 of 9 dead in limo fire

If you read through the article and then the comments, a lot of them are probably right. According to CHP, the fire started in the rear of the limo. Usually, the only passenger door is... at the rear of the limo. The passengers would have had to head into the smoke and fire to escape, and there was probably nothing the driver could do to help them once there was actual engulfment of the vehicle with flames.

Most of the windows on vehicles now are electric, too, and on a luxury vehicle like that they might have even been reinforced or bulletproof. They might not have even been able to break out the windows to try to get out and they might not have been functioning, depending on the nature of the fire.

What a tragedy, and our thoughts should be with the families of the 5 people who lost their lives.

I always thought that limos with only one entrance at the rear seemed unsafe. It certainly makes me feel a bit claustrophobic.

Would have sucked to be one of the women that escaped and have to just stand there while your friends burn to death.

Very sad... 🙁

I think the Limo industry can plan on spending some money to fit additional doors, and maybe roof hatches, in the near future. I believe this is essentially why schoolbuses have a door in the rear. A horrifying incident like this is often what it seems to take to get government moving.

The good thing is that it looks like only the back quarter of the limo burned out. Maybe they can still have open casket funerals...

I think we've had enough of your liberal postings. What we need is less regulation, not more.

What a horrific accident.
A simple emergency window is not that big a deal. My 50 year old airplane has a single door and a push out window on the other side.

jule, obviously if the women died because of a lack of exit venues, something needs to be done. It's like having enough lifeboats for every passengers.

For crying out loud, more people died in this incident than in the Boston bombing and look at the resources expended in Boston so this shit would never happen again.

I'm curious to know how a fire started in the back of the car. Not a whole lot going on there and it doesn't look to be a gas tank thing since the flames are coming from the back window. Most vehicle fires I've witnessed start in the engine.

From the comments, it sounds like limos are usually overloaded with electrical "amenities" for the passengers in the back. Otherwise, alcohol + drunk + smoking/lighters + peer pressure, it shouldn't be too hard to use your imagination.

There's a report that the limo was one passenger over it's rated limit although I don't know if there's a weight component to the limit. Maybe the differential or a wheel bearing was low on grease and overheated.

I think this was the bridal party post-wedding, as it appears that the passengers were all women, including the newly-wed bride (one of those killed).

🙁
