5 nuke carriers docked at the same time (pic)

all 5 could be destroyed and we'd still have more carriers than the rest of the world combined

carriers-2013.gif

wait.. we have 19 active carriers?!
I thought all non-nuke carriers were retired?

No state actor has the reach these days to hit Norfolk, and I doubt terrorists could pull it off either.
actually Moscow to Washington, DC is 4,890 miles.....
Russia`s strategic bomber which is also capable of refueling if need be in flight has a range of 9,400 miles.......it is not inconceivable that they could attempt to bomb that Naval Base.....a suicide mission like that IF successful would not be a pretty site!

Of course they would have to evade everything we could throw at them once they penetrated US air space....

My guess is that everybody was in port for the annual Navy Art Fair. If you look at the flight deck (that's navy soldier talk for the flat part) of the second boat you can see all the pavilions.

they aren't carriers, they're Amphibious Assault Ships

The Marines love those things, they still launch planes and helos and the tilt rotors.

If I remember right.

What the whole Amphibius Assault thing refers to to begin with, in coordination with other things.

Has been awhile, I mostly build things these days.

A bunch of assaults with carriers around will be bad news for most things.

There will be Aegis destroyers and various things with them too.

Does Russia have any capital ship building capability left?

They had to buy two Mistral-class ships from France recently.

Not even sure if that deal went through atm.

I'd have to look that one up, all things considered, it might be borked maybe.

I walke don the deck of the USS Midway last November and remember looking across the bay and seeing the USS Ronald Reagan and one other CVN and thinking "Man those boats must be almost double the size of this".

I watched the Reagan sail (steam? react?) past on its way out of Pearl Harbor from the deck of the USS Missouri. The size difference between the carrier and the biggest class of battleships the US ever built was impressive

Those stuctures on the flight deck have nothing to do with "flight week". They're errected for maintenance purposes.

And alky, if that comment was so obvious then the original statement wouldn't be made with the orignal pic, #insert capt. dumbass tagline and such.

Yeah, "reach" in this case stands for "capability to deliver force" not "we have a plane that can usually fly that far."

Yes. They have been planning to build a few carriers but construction hasn't started on them yet.

Russia isn't really interested in matching US by tonnage of carriers though.

China has 10,000+ missiles ready to sink a carrier. How many of you think they'll be able to sink one?

Yes. Are you kidding? Of course they have the capability to sink one, they probably have the capability to sink several. Russia is the same. Both countries have spent the last 4 decades figuring out counters to US Naval Doctrine.

Perhaps 10 years from now this picture will be the last picture of all these carriers together before most were sent to the bottom of the pacific by China...

Perhaps 10 years from now this post will be the last one you ever made before descending into raving foamy madness. But probably not.

Slightly more on topic, as was already said, they'd first have to want to. After what the world went through 75 years ago, industialized nations have little appetite for direct confrontation with one another.

Amazing that Russia only has one...

Russia has never had a particularly large navy, not enough relevant warm water ports and such. And the Cold War didn't exactly do their military any wonders.

facts are facts, not many people are aware of the extent of US naval dominance

the point of having so many carriers isn't necessarily because the US is disconnected from other world powers, but because the coasts are so very far apart, and having multiple carriers provides the ability to send them out in rotations with only a few deployed at any given time, and the rest in training/maintenance

"This is the first time since WWII that five [5] nuclear powered aircraft carriers were docked together"
Yeah. On December 6th, 1941, we actually had [6] nuclear powered aircraft carriers lined up in Pearl Harbor. :colbert:

"This is the first time since the Napoleanic wars that five [5] nuclear powered aircraft carriers were docked together"

"This is the first time since Paris Hilton became a skank that five [5] nuclear powered aircraft carriers were docked together"

The statement is still correct.

speaking of north korea. was fishing on the pier one day (which is somewhat across from the pictured dock and a "questionable" asian guy was at the end of the pier taking photos with what seemed like a 2 ft lens and logging stuff as they went by... followed by blacked out fed suvs pulling up and escorting him off and another set of guys gathering his equipment

The NSA picked up his camera phone pics. so its ok. we are safe.
