Should I pay the 11 bucks for the Astra unlimited is it that much better, or is the $8 dollar deal for newsgroups good enough??

I'm happy with AstraWeb. No problem with retention. I don't know about the other provider as I have no experience with them. I've downloaded things as old as 600 days off AstraWeb with no missing parts.

ive used Newshosting for the past 4 yrs @ 14.95 a mo unlimited. It is prolly more expensive then others out there but its pretty decent, no complaints here. Just downloading 1 or 2 things of "intrest" and i break even for the month :)

is newzgroups kinda like the torrents?

from what i read that is what i'm getting at. but newzgroupes are more secure with SSL but just cost small monthly fee, like everyone posting seems like $11 is the normal price....

Looks like the deal on the unlimited is sold out. They still have $5/mo but on non-unlimited. Still, pretty good for 75GB/mo. I probably should have jumped on the unlimited while it was available, but had to take off for dinner, and then I forgot about it until now. Here's their other deals:

It is like a vast worldwide forum with over 100,000 subforums. Instead of using a web browser you use a specialized news reader. Think of it as forums that you read like offline email, complete with attachments and a lot of spam.

Yep but the deal was around a lot longer than I thought it would be.

Second posting on this thread.
Ok, I see 17$ for the 75gb a month. Am I the only one seeing this? I have yet to see this 5$ deal.

There plenty of newsgroup providers that will let you use the same account with 2 ips at the same time you just have to find them. Works out quite cheap. Even in their TOS they say it is allowed. Not talking about Newshosting though because I do not like them.

Newsgroup is offering $8.00 bucks a month Unlimited. Anyone know if they are any good.?

http://www.newsgroupdirect.com/signup/

What do you think? Says 50 connections. Should I bite??

I'm biting when I get home from work. I'm paying $10 a month not but only get a tad over 500 days retention, so more retention for less money? Yes please! I get 20 connections not but 10 will max out my ~10Mbps connection. So unless your on a highend FIOS I don't think you have much to worry about.

Not really, except for the pr0n and illegal downloads stuff. :whiste:

Torrenting is more of a file transfer technology while usenet newsgroups is kind of like its own network of forums that uses a dedicated newsreader software to peruse. If you upload anything to your news server, it duplicates your message world wide to all other news servers in the world. Thus, typically what you get is the same regardless of which "service" you have. There are differences, however, such as how long they retain messages.

Newsgroups used to be an integral part of internet services, BITD. However, I think lack of popularity plus rampant illegal material made most ISPs drop it as a service. Now we have paid services such as what we are talking about in this thread.

Same here. Been with Atra for over 2 years and love it. At 833 days I think they even beat Giganews now when it comes to retention.

Giganews claims 842 days but that's essentially equal for all intents and purposes.

Giganews is good but the most expensive. They do have the highest retention too but not by enough to care. There prices rise for some of their plans next years but that is a good thing actually.

You can get Giganews level unlimited per a month service for cheaper if you must be on Giganews servers. $9.99 per a month to $19.95 for unlimited plans.

FYI

Just got an email from NewsgroupDirect, offer is $8/mo, up to 50 connections and SSL. The email did not state when/if the rate would expire, it does state 700-day retention if that even possible.

Astraweb rate is $11/mo unlimited or $10/mo DSL speed. Thundernews is still offering 75gb for $5/mo which is still not bad. Block accounts are nice as they don't expire, but are pricey.
