5 mins to leave your house.. what do you do?

Around 12pm, there was a bunch of fire trucks, police cars and ambulances outside my window. Apparently, my neighbor, she is 70'ish went out and left the gas pilot turned 1/4 way so the burners never lit, just kept clicking for at least 3-4 hours. Each unit has these old pos gas stoves from 1980's.

Someone reported fumes, NYSEG emergency crew shows up, says there is a gas leak, calls 911 and the fun starts there.

About 12:15, the police bang on my door like they are going to break it down, they tell me you got 5 mins to get out as there is a gas leak and one spark or cigarette will blow the whole building to shit.

I'm thinking this is some b.s., but smell the gas as i go downstairs.

The cop proceeds to the other tenements issuing the same move your ass now warning. Thinking the building is going to blow up, i grab my external usb hard drive which has all my crap on it, can replace the hardware, not the software.

Everyone is standing outside for at least and hour till NYSEG is able to shut the main line off, just then the lady who caused all this chaos comes driving down the block like nothing has happened.

She lets the police and NYSEG in, they turn off the gas on her stove, open some windows and order is restored.

All of this got me thinking, if my apt blew up, i would not only need to replace clothing and furniture, but social security, passport, bank, credit cards, home/auto insurance and on and on.

The fire marshal told the landlord you need to put Carbon Monoxide and Natural Gas detectors in every unit, looks like my rent is going up.

Was talking to a cop outside, he tells me you should scan every important document you need, stick in on a flash drive and put that into a safety deposit box. Seems like a lot of work, but it would make life easier if it the unthinkable occurs.

Is anyone on this forum disaster ready when you got 5 mins to get the hell out?

Grab wife, kid, diaper bag, phone. The last two are exempt in a true emergency. All my backups are off site important docs in safe deposit. The house can burn.

Another reason I hate the idea of renting in a complex. I rent, but at least it is a single unit that no one else's stupidity can blow me up.

I don't think I have anything too much that isn't replaceable. I should probably get my off-site backup of my important files done soon to my office PC.

1. This is why I would never live in an apartment.
2. I would just leave and not bring anything. Nothing I have is very important anyway.

A couple of months ago, this happened in the office next to mine. They got a new hvac+gas pack but the installer didn't replace the 30 year old cutoff valve and it started leaking . IIRC, there 9% gas in the air and 14% is combustible.

What to grab...fam, wallet, keys. Visa + wal mart in the short run and insurance for replacement. A blown up office would be more disrupting.

1953 gas explosion in my home town. 10 killed.

No gas at my apartment so this wouldn't happen.

I don't have that much stuff anyways. Would grab my laptop, tablet, phone, and some school stuff.

Most important: Keys, phone, wallet. After that: Laptop.

Other than that, important stuff is in a fireproof gun safe. Clothes, etc. are replaceable.

I own almost nothing. Would grab my box of life paperwork, my phone and charger, and weather necessary clothes. I'd be out in like 30 seconds.

Phone, wallet, keys and the laptop. Most of my important stuff is scanned and backed up remotely, and with a DL and credit/ATM cards I can get most everything else I need to get by until I get back into a house.

Put on pants from prior day, which has keys and wallet in it. Grab phone off charger, grab the painting from my Grandfather and the one from my sister. If enough time exists, grab the photo of my dad in Rome.

Wife's purse, big box of old pictures passed down through the family & with pictures from when my kids were little, and the dogs, though I cannot foresee any circumstance where something is jeopardizing my home on such sudden notice.

It would take me about 2 minutes to grab a bag and stuff a weeks worth of clothes in it. I'd then grab my laptop, extra keys, and medicine. I could easily be out of the house in 5 minutes.

Edit: I would also grab my cell phone charger.

Edit2: This is pretty much how I pack when I go on vacation, except I take about 5 extra minutes to pack it nicely.

Keys, phone, wallet, warm jacket.

Clothes, furniture and electronics can all be replaced.

I say clothes because I don't want the first thing I do after my house burns down to be clothes shopping. I can go to a store and buy all my toiletries and stuff, but clothes shopping can wait a day or two until I get things settled a bit.

5 mins is nothing, prior Evacs I've done we're min 30m.

In 5 mins I grab my kid, dog, keys and I'm gone. Don't think I'd even look back.
