um...wow....5 Million is not small....

IRVINE, Calif. ? December 19, 2005 ? Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®, its massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), has surpassed five million customers worldwide. The subscription-based MMORPG launched approximately one year ago in North America, Australia, and New Zealand and has since released in multiple countries throughout Europe and Asia.

so true

Ok, if that is hyperbole, that is one thing... But in order to confirm how true that is, it would have to be a hard number.

First of all, I do not believe WoW has any BOTs, or if they do, rather few. It takes enough skill to play one WoW account, I have no idea how someone could play two and even so, the advantages are not great.

Second there are not as many farmers as people suggest... I would say less than 1% of the population is made up of farmers. There are just a lot of hardcore players in the game, that is all.

It does seem like there are a lot of farmers, but statisticly I don't think it is very high at all.

Whatever the case, the MMO is the most successfull in history... I can rip on it, or you can. Everyone can, but when 5 million accounts are being paid for, that speaks for itself. The game keeps growing and it appears to have no boundaries...

They recently let it loose in Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong on November 8, 2005.

True, generally, however, the "good" drops are almost all "Bind on Pickup" which makes it impossible for farmers to sell.

Out of curiosity....What was the number EQ got up to? I remember it was something equally as large if not larger.

At it's peak EQ had around 400-500k.

Hmmm you're right. I though EQ had gotten more than that for some reason.

Just at that time in the internet that was huge.

The previous record was just over 3.2 million suscribers for Lineage around January 2004. It's BLOWING away the competition. It would be interesting to see how the numbers stacked up with WoW vs all other subscription MMOs combined.

You can't really compare them... comparing EQ to WoW for example would not give you an accurate feel because EQ was north America and Europe only, and it was primarily North America at that.... At first they didn't even have European specific servers but later they added a few.... and at it's peak it had about 750,000 subscribers. Obviously WoW has far more subscribers, but they are tapped into the asian market where they have probably 3 of their 4 million subscribers at. I also personally believe that the numbers being reported for WoW are inflated. They do have a very large base, I'm sure larger than any other current or previous game, but I'd be willing to bet every dollar that they do not actually have anywhere near 5 million people actually playing that game. They may have had 5 million accounts from the beginning until now, but half of those have been closed since the opening. I really don't know how they are manipulating their numbers to get that figure but statistics always lie, and 5 million subscribers is just too rediculous a number for me to believe. I'd believe 3 million... not 5.

From another thread:

Blizzard defines a "customer" as one who has "paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft," or someone who "has purchased the installation box bundled with one free month [of] access." The company also counted "Internet Game Room players [who have] accessed the game over the last seven days" as paying customers.

I did the same in august. $15/mo. ? forget that crap.
for the supposed 75,000,000 they make monthly, I think the game could be better and I think that my $15 can be spent on something better. Something tangible that lasts longer than a month.

Such as Battlefield 2... which is free on its' servers.

You're going to spend your $15/month on BF2 because it is free? :p

BTW, the $15 charge never bothered me for any massive. I guess that maybe I'm used to it by now and don't even notice $15 missing from the 'ol bank account. But hey, if you're just going to throw money away at BF2 every month how about sending some my way instead? ;)

LOL - yes, something tangible and long-lasting, like a few hundred cell phone minutes, 15-days of bandwidth, a pair of matinee movie tickets, or 1/3 your cable bill.

I still play it. But I can see how most people would get sick of it if you weren't part of a decent guild. We dropped Nefarian a little while ago and are practicing AQ on the test servers. So.... Who knows. It eats my freetime which used to be spent on buying and watching dvds.
