I own guns and enjoy shooting, but you won't catch me at a gun show or public range. There's a lot of stupid people out there, and gun owners certainly aren't exempt.

To put things in perspective, almost a hundred people are killed everyday in car accidents in this country.

How does that put it into perspective? How many people drive cars? How many gun shows are there? Maybe if there were more car accidents at car shows it might have made sense.

For a lot of people, shooting is a hobby. It entails some risk, but so do a lot of other recreational activities. The timing is humorous, but this sort of thing is not common.

Though it may have some folks reconsidering armed guards in schools; accidents are rare, but school shootings are rarer by far.

It's a perfectly valid statement. Accidental discharges at gun shows are a rare occurrence, but accidents in automobiles happen every single day, many, many times, and with much deadlier consequence.

Yip, though some morons would try to make it sound like it just happens at every gun show.

There are more guns in this country than there are cars.

I'm for more gun education. Those accidents would have been avoided, if they had followed proper safety procedures.

Yes but there aren't more people using them or using them as frequently as a car. It's an apples to oranges comparison.

It's like free advertising to the anti-gun crowd.
It really is. These damned imbeciles, really, you go to a gun show to sell your shotgun and it's LOADED? What level of clinical retardation have you been diagnosed with?

Taken at face value it's a dubious comparison for the reason you state. If we expand out somewhat, though, we see that there are 300+ guns in the country, so about 5X as many guns as cars and deaths by guns are a much smaller number than death by cars. There are many ways to look at this--and even that isn't entirely fair, since those cars are used all the time and many guns aren't. One could, and should go on for much longer to look at the matter truly objectively :)

The particular owners of those guns should never own a gun again. They should be criminally too stupid.

Number of gun homicides in 2011 - 11,101
Number of gravity related deaths - 25,562

Call up hussein and demand he outlaw gravity now, it has more than double the amount of kills that guns do.

Obama is to blame for this. Because of his agenda, words, deeds and actions tons of Americans have purchased their first firearm. Unfortunately because of Obama that will mean more accidents.

You can't do anything about gravity, you can do something about guns.

I'm wondering if the Ohio incident involved a Glock ?

Whatever it was, it didn't have a working magazine safety, which is one of the gun safety improvements that should be mandated.

If your gun fires accidently and injures someone you failed to operate your weapon safely, it's your carelesness. The car accidents although commonly happen due to human failure, more factors have to happen in same time to create an accident. And, they are designed for transport not destruction.

Have you ever owned a Glock? I've owned 3 and couldn't get any of them to fire without engaging the trigger safety.

Gun shows fault and owner. Here in Colorado you check with a sheriff and you show your weapon is clear and unloaded before you can bring it in. Owner should always make sure his weapon is clear before transporting it anywhere.

TPM has a paywalled private area called "Prime". I joined there a couple of months ago because I was interested, and because I wanted to express support for the site's founder. TPM is left-leaning generally, which I knew about, but I find the site informative.

I got along pretty well with most of the people there -- at first. To be honest, I found the place rather dull due to little disagreement on anything. Anyway, as soon as Newtown happened and people started gun control discussions, I learned first hand that the private forum is REALLY left-leaning.

I am literally the only person on this forum who doesn't think gun owners are evil and that we should institute more laws immediately. And I'm far from an extremist on the subject. Every thread on the topic consists either of an echo chamber of agreement, or if I post, everyone dogpiling me.

It's pretty amazing.
