5 HDs, 3 CDs, 10 Fans, 2 CPUs... Is 300Watts enough?

Add two video cards, sound card, scsi card, nic and modem.

I just added the last two harddrives but haven't plugged back in the fans. Now I'm wondering if I'm pushing my luck over here.

What do you think?

If it runs, great...but I'd really concider a 400watt unit. Besides, if you can afford all that stuff it should be no problem 🙂

Dude, that's just ridiculous. I don't think you started this thread to ask whether the PSU could handle it, you did it to gloat. 😀

I only have 4 hard drives and two CD-ROM's running off a 250W. But then there's the two external CD-ROM's, SCSI hard drive, and Zip. Geez, maybe I have a problem.

Nah.

Wow.. I have 2 HDs, 2 Fans, 2 CDRoms, 1 Zip and I already worry about it. I am using 300 watts... if yours can work, let me know so I can add some HDs ...

i think 300W gives about 8A current in the 12v rail

however each hdd use about 2A(max current) at 12v

i htink you are 'overworking' your ps 🙂

I've a quantum atlas iv in my hand at the mo & its rated 900mA, 'suppose power requirements may be higher for bigger/more recent drives though.

[edit]its also wants 600mA of 5v dc [/edit]

Actually, just checked the quantum specs & 900mA is idle draw - 2.4A to 3.4A peak!!!

The power supply should have its output specs on a sticker somewhere. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm running 3 HDD's, 2 CDROM, P2 450, GF2MX, all slots full...on a 230W PS. I'm not worried.

Xtreme, your math is completely wrong. To calculate how much of your PS you are utilizing you simply add up the wattage of the components in your system. Your average HD (7200RPM-15k RPM) only uses around 10-15W during heavy activity. Even if you don't believe that method, you're trying to say you can't run more than 2 7200RPM hard drives in a system with a 300W PS? That's ridiculous. I had a system with a 300W PS running a Cheetah X15, 3 7200RPM IDE drives, 2 cdrom drives, a dvd drive, 6 PCI cards, and a Voodoo5 with no problems at all.

Wounded Waller, do you beat your chest, scratch under your arms and eat bananas all the time BTW?
oohuhoohuhoohuh

maybe you should ask the local shaman to drill a hole in your head to let the bad spirits out.
ummmmummmmmmummmmmmmummmmmmm

I know you, your one of those guys around here that remove your motorbike's silencer aren't you?

Is it just me or am I the only one with one hard drive, one dvd rom drive, one floppy drive, one sound card, one modem, and one graphics card at a time here?

I have an Antec 303x - I ran two HDDs, two CDROMs, an Athlon rig, and a 78 watt (!) peltier all without a hitch. If you have a quality 300, youre fine. Generic? It could be close.

I have 2 Hd's, 2 cd's, 1 zip, 6 fans, 2 hd coolers. All my pci slots are ful and one isa slot is filled. Im using a 300watt ps and everythign runs great.

5 hard drives is pretty sick though. How much space is that? Very cool though. Your system is [H]ard

Ahem.... Sorry if some of you have a problem with what other people have. I usually worry about what I have. In other words, NO I'm not gloating.

Reason I'm asking is because since I added the last 2 HD I haven't been able to boot to W98. I wonder if W2k's better power management is pulling the system by a thread. Which means that if I plug the fans back in, then I may go over the edge.

My eletricity classes were quite a while ago and I don't remember anymore if I need to worry about the current(a) or the power(W), or both. So far I tend to lean towards Pariah's explanation since I had 3HD and everything else till last week working with no probs. But then again, I might have been on the limit then and now I'm over.

So if anyone else has a good formula or experience with similar setup please let me know. Otherwise don't embarass yourselves with silly comments.

And Rigoletto, commit yourself and spare us the pain to know you exist.

PS. Gee, I take too long to write 😱
Sephiroth_IX, mine is an Antec as well and I don't have a peltier. I doubt it that 3 HDs will consume the 78watts that your peltier does.
Also the reason I have so many HD is that I like to buy a new system one piece at a time. Whenever I decide on my next mobo, I already have all the other components.

The easiest way is to add up the wattage. CPU (50-70W), video card (no more than 25W, except maybe V5), hard drives (10-15W when active). The only time xtreme's theory comes into play is if you run everything off the same power rail (which isn't actually possible). If you have no power Y-cables, you have nothing to worry about. However, you may run into problems if you run multiple splitters and then try to run a few hard drives on the same power cable.

Consider yourself lucky Syborg. I had so many configuration problems and resource conflicts that I ended building a second system to split up my components and relieve some headaches.

How many partitions are in all those hard drive combined? Perhaps Windows 98 is having problems with so many diferent drives to initialize or whatever.

Pariah, I do have some Y splitters. But I tought I did a good job not overcharging any single one. I'll take another look tough.

Syborg1211, I don't have that many partitions. The only conflict with drive letters maybe with the network drives. But I think when that happens the network connection is not established. I'll boot in safe mode in W98 and check that out.

Thanks
WW
