Bluelight.com has the Digmedia 'Musicstore' MP3 player, with build in 5-gig hard disk and cd drive marked down to $129. Check out the digmedia website for more info - it's hard to find on the site, since this player is discontinued.

http://www.digmedia.cc/newsite/htmlver/index.htm

A few notes:

1. I haven't bought one of these, so purchase at your own risk.
2. It can rip mp3's off the CD drive in realtime only.
3. It looks like 128kbps is the maximum bitrate for mp3's.

Even given all of that, it seems to be a good deal - you can transfer MP3's to it via USB.

Just figured I'd point out a good deal - as mentioned above, I haven't purchased one myself - I have a 18-gig 'Roopaq' that I got from Compgeeks a few months ago...

hmmm...

hmmm...

I dunno. hmmmm...

oh, and a few extra bucks from ebates too.

hmmm...

clarification on the bitrate, thats the max bitrate that it RIPS at (it has a CD player built in...) but no mention of what it can handle as far a playback bit rate of MP3s transferred to it via USB.

also, they mention a firmware update that will allow it to play MP3 CDRs

not portable needs power supply.
for portability need soulmate mp3 player
no support for mac.
how is this different from just using lineout from your soundcard to your stereo system?
as above rips in realtime and has a 128kbps limit on .mp3. I like at least 256kbps. no support for ogg vorbis or wma.
cannot play mp3 cds...

still 80% off is good if this is what you were looking for at this time. I missed out on the roopaq. I think I'll wait.
Thanks for the post.

Here is a lackluster PCWorld Review.

Plus go searching at your favorite coupon site for 15 off 75 (if it's still valid). I don't find bluelight.com at ebates either.

I think I will pass. Why the hell have 5 gigs of storage if you can only encode at 128?

Amazingly cheap though. I wish the better ones would come down to this price too.

Not too hard to find on their website, at the top click web receivers, local storage, MusicStore.

Here is the FAQ

And a major negative aspect, for now....
Can the MusicStore play MP3 CDs?
The MusicStore currently plays standard audio CDs only. There are plans for a firmware upgrade this year which will allow MP3 discs to be read.

BlueLight doesn't have the SoulMate on sale aso you don't gett the use of the built in high spped docking port, and this things is too wacked on rights management. If you did d/l to a soulmate apparently you can't play it on the musicstore until you take it back off the soulmate. What other wacky controls do they have?

hmmm... wonder if you can tear it open and put in a bigger HD?

if so, and if it will PLAY higher bitrate MPSa xfered by USB, it would be kind of a nifty backup for my 40 gig of MP3s...

Sitting on the kitchen counter by a boombox or something.
