5 GHz P4 article at THG

A new speed record but you can't bench at that speed?!?

*Tom* "Wow!!! it posted!!! New record!!!!" 😛

thats still pretty impressive man, a 2ghz overclock is insane benchmarks or not. but it would be nice to at least have seen a screenshot of cpu-z or something, proving its really at 5ghz. jesus, 5ghz...

They do have a CPU-z screenshot of it. I think it's being impressive is a matter of subjective interpretation though, for myself I find max overclocks people can actually use for their computing needs more impressive than these stunts. I just see the 5ghz as a "all show, no go" stunt for bragging rights and traffic, it serves no practical function and the system isn't really usable. Opinions vary and that's mine 🙂

i agree with that one. ive seen alot more useless post then this one, and im sure you all have to, but this isnt really useless, i think its badass that they got it running at 5ghz. and so what if it fails prime95, i bet if they did do some benchmarks on it, we would have seen some insane results.... they really need to do some benches. but i highly doubt any 3d application/game would even run on that thing, if the temp of the nitrogen was -199, and then only -80 or so after the oc, thats pretty frickin HOT to be that high from -199! i bet launching anything on that vid card 3d wise would have made the pc take a dump. but its just awesome to see 5ghz. thats fricking insane. not even 5 years ago i thought my 366@550 was badass.....and look at intel now, 3.2 @ 5.2ghz. 2,000mhz dood, TWO THOUSAND. props to toms hardware, but i want some benches.

although I'll admit I don't have enough technical knowledge, as technology evolves (including systems of cooling and microarchitecture) it will be possible.

So that would make it about as fast as a 3 GHz Athlon? 😉

JYYCFG (Just yankin' your chain for grins). 😀

lol... i don't even wanna try to scale up an athlon speed to a 5 ghz p4....

🙂

but i mean it is amazing they did get 5 ghz though they didn't do any benches...

heh, a 5ghz amd chip would like, equivalent to a 7-8ghz intel chip, thing was haul some serious ass.

When 5GHz really is possible, the only way I think they'll be able to keep the CPU cool is by developing a new line of cases without vents and and fans.

I'm talking about climate-controlled cases... sealed up to prevent external air from altering internal thermal conditions. Only then will they be able to implement a cooling system within the case without the fear of condensation forming depending on what climate the system is operating in.

Maybe Audi can help out with this one 😉

The only thing it shows is that the p4 is capable of doing 5GHz with liquid nitrogen. Can you get a steady supply of liquid nitrogen?

Why is the chip type blacked out in the CPU-z screenshot?

The reason there are no benches? Intel pays Tom too much for those Centrino ads & stuff. The 2.8GHz Athlon64 FXs that you can buy pre-overclocked with compressor-driven cooling but no liquid nitrogen needed probably spank it in the benches.

Someone needs to set up a 4GHz Opteron liquid nitro system. Just to put in Toms face for saying they "know from experience" that the extreme overclocking requires a P4 -- you seen them ever attempt it with a Hammer?
