5 ghz Ivy Bridge setup. Any recommendations?

That setup should be able to hit 5 Ghz right?

Dual 460GTX 1GB

Unfortunately this machine does not get anywhere near 5 Ghz.

I think I'm just disappointed with my last build and really would like this new machine to overclock well. I'll most likely go with noctua fans all around to keep that scheme going. Also I'm hoping the single GPU and the large case will help with keeping the temperature down. What else can I do?

If your 2600K doesn't get anywhere near 5GHz, why are you assuming 3770K will? Ivy Bridge overclocks worse, not better. I'd be happy to settle for 4.5-4.7Ghz on 3770K+D14.

Better preparation? Bigger case, better fans. I guess I was hoping for too much :\

Nope can't do water. Don't want it to be OC'ed 24/7 due to heat.
 
Pretty safe to say you wont be doing 5ghz Ivy on air but depending on your ambient temps and how comfortable you are with your CPU hitting 80+ C you should be able to do anywhere between 4.5 and 4.8 imo.

You got a bad 2600k or are doing something wrong. What are your temps and voltage settings?

Wait for Microcenter to sell the 2600k at $200 again. Buy a new one and with luck run it at 4.9 or 5ghz.
 
Hmm, Idontcare tested D14 vs H100 on 2600K, he managed 5.0Ghz but temps were >90C in stress testing. I don't think not getting to 5Ghz with D14 is that unusual
 
My TRUE from 2008 will allow me to run my 2550k at 5ghz. I would keep it there but it just requires way too much voltage. Nothing too special about my TRUE compared to a D14 or H100, either.

If you want 5Ghz you need LN2, DICE or a TEC setup. With air unless you live on the arctic circle its not going to happen

Photography, videography, games (?), AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor.

The Sandy Bridge build I gave to my girlfriend. I also wanted a Thunderbolt board.

Just got done building yesterday. Ended up going with a GTX670.

most everything said in this thread has been true so far about the temps/volts required to run IB at 5 ghz

i personally have a xspc 360 radiator, apogee xt waterblock, and swiftech mcp655 setup that should destroy any air cooling by a good margin unless you're talking about running tornado finger chopping air speeds with the window open in the middle of winter.

my IB 3570k requires 1.38v to run at 4.7ghz. temps during linx and prime95 gets into the high 80s, occasionally brushing close to 90, depending on how hot my office is.

the ONLY way you're going to get even close to 5ghz on air is with a super golden chip, which many members have been searching for (check hardforums). im talking about one that will do 5ghz at 1.3v or less, which is pretty nonexistent with current batches and manufacturing processes which do not use the melted solder.

there are members there that have gone through quite a few 3570k and 3770ks looking for that magical 5ghz. i even looked through a good amount of results over at xtremesystems and even 4.7/4.8 ghz is tough, on water.

realistically with very good air cooling, you'll get 4.5-4.6, 4.7 if youre lucky and 4.8 if you're really lucky.
 
i wanted to add that i had a 2700k with the exact same cooling before which was rock stable at 5ghz/1.45v but temps were barely above 70c

IB is HOT.

Believe it or not, 5Ghz on a thermalright Hr-02 Only 1 Fan!

1.31v, prime95, ibt and cinebench stable run 🙂

On high 90's thought!

No lap, or IHS mod, all stock chip... Still in warranty!

Very Nice Chip!! I am hoping to get there soon. With 1.35-1.36 - We will see...?
 
45k 1.232v temp 75c
47k 1.296v temp 88c
Its easy to get to 48k now with 65f room temp on water but when summer comes
The hotter you go the more voltage is needed.
