$5 for Brother HL1440 32 mb 72 SIMM upgrade

Just any fyi, even though the specs stated its max memory is 34mb, it can be upgraded to more than that. In one of the very old threads, someone posted a link to a 64mb stick of ram for 9-10 bucks...works great.

heh... I should read more carefully.

I thought it was $5 for a HL1440 printer...... duh...me so stupid

😱

I did that, I have 64MB in mine -- works fine.

One drawback though is that the Brother printer driver only displays 34MB. But query the printer directly and it reports 66MB.

What are the specs for the simm that works in the HL-1440? I have a lot of old gear around... Is it EDO memory?

thanks,
Frob

yes EDO 72 pin for old 386/486 computer

386's, if I recall, used 30-pin SIMMs. You needed 4 of them to fill up one bank. I also had a 486 board with 30-pin SIMMs, I think.

72-pin SIMMs were for pentium motherboards.. 2 SIMMs made up one bank.

Brother 1440 memory is supposed to be FPM only, not EDO.

Is there a noticeable difference if you have 32mb of ram or 64mb for printing quality? If so, can someone please link to the 64mb on this site. I just want to make sure I get the memory that's compatible with this hl-1440 printer which I've had for a while now. Just never knew which memory to buy to upgrade it.

Thanks,
Mike

I got the 64mb module as well. I got it at one of the yahoo shopping sites. I'll try to find the address.

Have any of you that have the 64 mb install tested whether its using all of it or just 32 mb of it? I always wondered, but I have nothing to print that would test it. Thanks!

The 1440 is a 1200x600 DPI printer at best. It's also monochrome. Do the math:

1200*600 (resolution per square inch) *8.5*14 (maximum paper size) / 8 (1-bit representation of pixel, since it's monochrome) / 1024 = 10.5 megs. Subtract a little since you can't do borderless and voila - you only need 10 mb onboard to print a page.

If you store truetype fonts onboard, or hold the last page in memory, you can run it up to 34 megs. I doubt it's smart enough to use more than 34 megs, but you can't max that out, since the printer doesn't do onboard postscript decoding.

well, i take my "thanks OP" back. got the memory and tried to install today. the module sits too tall in the SIMM socket to physicall fit in the 1440. did anyone else have this issue? i can tell this memory is not new(maybe salvaged?) so i wonder if i just got an oddball one...

I order 2 sticks from the link and installed without any problem. Did you install the memory at an angle to the slot first before you straighten it out. Good luck

I had a 16mb stick sitting on a shelf for 3 years which I installed. It allows me to do 1200x600. I am not sure what else would you be able to do w/ 32mb. What would be the improvement for going 32mb -> 64mb?

Brother 1440 doesn't care if it's FPM or EDO - I tested both in mine. EDO has 2K and 4K refresh rates - I have 4K in mine.

Also doesn't care if it's 32MB or 64MB - I tested both in mine.

No, you didn't get an oddball one. Mine wouldn't fit either. They sent the wrong memory. According to the Crucial site, the height of the Simm for the HL-1440 is 1 inch. The height of the Simm I received was 11/2 inches and would not fit into the printer. It was too tall. Sent the memory back and asked for a replacement. I'll see what happens.

okay, but why should be think the memory from computersurplusoutlet is identical to the spec on the crucial site?

You are right tubs. I can't be sure the specs are identical, however, the images on the CSO and Crucial site are the same.
