5 downed helicopters since Thursday...wtf?

Yeah. To update entire chopper squadrons (squadrons isn't the right word, is it grasshopper?) would cost alot of money.

The Military is much more interested in blowing up their enemies from afar.

Besides, why spend billions on updating the choppers, if you can keep the current ones, and just lose marines life?

Besides T-56 (C-130) engines, I also teach T-64, which are used on the Pavelow Helicopters. The one that was blown up after the hard landing was a Pave. The sand does play a big role in the performance of these engines. Because of the environment, you have to constantly do engines washes after the missions, or they will not pull good enough power. It's the same with salt water.

I can't speculate on what casued this one, but I can tell you from expereince that when I worked in the shop, the engines we got back for maintenance were so worn down from being sand blasted that they wouldn't even come close to pulling proper power. Add that with blackout conditions and younger pilots and you have the odds stacked against you. 🙁

Tell that to the people who keep downsizing the military.

maybe is a coverup by Bush...

the helicopters actually got missle'd down....but they are covering it up!

i was thinking about propaganda today and that thought actually crossed my mind. hussein's govt is probably telling its people they shot them down. even if they shot ours down, lying to the public about it might be better for the war effort. you wouldn't want to increase opposition to it. have i been watching too many conspiracy theory movies? =)

anyhow ... from the liberal, tree hugging capital of the world (berkeley) ... i support the war. 🙂

They keep in close formation so that enemy radar will only dectect one craft, but in fact it can be a whole squad. If they didn't fly together closely, they have a higher risk of being dected by surface-to-air weapons.

The only thing I like about this war is all the new equip they are using now. We havn't seen this kind of deployment in a while.
