I know carbon monoxide has no smell, but I'm sure the rest of the exhaust smelt bad enough to notice.

I want to point and laugh, but it seems that carbon monoxide poisoning must be extremely quick and sneaky for none of them to realize what was happening and get out. The article says that they were in the pond for 15-30 minutes; that doesn't mean that they weren't unconscious within the first 2.
