i was in CDW and got this 5 connector ide cable i havent tried it yet but do i set the first one to master and the others to slave or cable select i wanna hook up my dvd drive cdrom and 2 cdburners

Talk about IDE overload. Two burners and a DVD all on one IDE channel. Hope you don't plan on burning from one burner to another while you watch a DVD 🙂

IDE only supports 2 drives per channel. I have never seen an IDE cable with more than 2 connectors. Must have been a problem during manufacturing (or you got a SCSI cable/drive). Anyways, to hook up three IDE drives you will need to use at least 2 IDE cables and channels. One master and 1 slave max per channel.

Unless you are speaking of procuring some development Serial ATA drives and cables from secret labs...

I agree with Xerox, it's probably SCSI.

I got 2 ide66/100 cables with 1+4 connectors. These things are 36inches long. i'm sure it only support 2 drives / channel, though. Why are these extra connectors there ? I don't know, but what I know is it can reach two drives pritty far away from eachother with help from these extra connectors.

IDE only supports two devices a master and a slave on the other hand SCSI depending if its uw uw2 or uw3 can support upto like 17 devices.

It just has the extra port (4 ports total) to help you reach drives in a full tower case.
I have seen this used by some OEM's in rare cases

You can NOT use all the ports at the same time

Isn't 36 inches out of spec for an ATA66/100 (80 hard conductors) cable? I think max distance for an ATA66 cable is 18 inches.

I suppose you could set up a bunch of removable drive trays on the extra connectors and just be sure you only have two drives on it at any one time.
.bh.

specifications is 18" max.

i used a 36" ata66 cable =) for a time. replaced them with rounded 24" ones which are also out of spec ;-)

as for the cable blakkice, return it. IDE only supports 2 drives per channel.

if you want 5 IDE drives, get yourself an ata66 or ata100 controller. promise makes good ones.
