I'd consider: Beatles, Johnny Cash, Clapton (if it includes the bands he's played in), Fleetwood Mac (especially if it includes works by the individual band members), *maybe* Michael Jackson, though in 20 years, I still haven't gotten un-sick of all his songs being overplayed for a decade.

Well, The Grateful Dead cover all genres, so that takes care of most.

so then I'd probably go:

Dead
Floyd
Zeppelin
Coltrane or Monk
....whatever

For me, such a list would be less about picking my top 5 favorites and more about seeking variety from music I really like.

1. The Who
2. Pink Floyd
3. John Denver
4. London Symphony Orchestra
5. Temptations

This will probably change as I think about it more, but I don't think I'd ever find solid ground with a question like this. In going over this list I figure variety between artists and size of their catalog are as important as my critical view of their work.

Jimi Hendrix
Radiohead
Miles Davis
Shakira
Sigur Ros

I've been listening to classic rock as long as I've been alive thanks to my hippie parents. So as great as the Beatles, Stones, Who, Dead, Floyd and Moody Blues are they're off my list.

Elvis Costello - as the Barenaked Ladies said "I'm all about value" - so many good songs to listen to over 15-20 great CDs.

Richard Thompson - also making great music for close to 40 years now, also with a wide variety of styles, from his Fairport Convention days through the present

Tori Amos - daffy goddess of the piano (and harpsichord), also with a large catalog of good music (and and ever-growing catalog of not so good . . . )

Chris Whitley - a great guitarist and soulful vocalist, RIP.

Vivaldi - I'd probably find some 40-CD box set monster, even though my favorite performance is of his works for lute by Jakob Lindberg

Finger Eleven (Rainbow Butt Monkeys originally)

Three Days Grace (Groundswell originally)

Suicidal Tendencies

Chevelle

Breaking Benjamin

Easiest list ever. It's mainly (98%) about 90s music.

Quantity and variety play a big role here. Pains me to leave out SRV and Aerosmith.
