5 Amish farmers killed in crash

The kicker is that the Amish will not go after the guy - there won't be any lawsuits, etc. There are a lot of Amish families in my area; in fact, that accident wasn't really that far from here. I know some Hostetlers, Bylers, Masts, and Millers who are Amish, so as I read the article, I was hoping that it wasn't someone I've met and done business with.

With all the Amish traffic in my area, it's scary sometimes to watch some of the idiots attempt to pass them on blind curves. Everyone passes them in no-passing zones (they move as far onto the shoulder as possible, so you're just barely into the oncoming lane); but most choose relatively safe areas to do so.

I don't pass them, but I see plenty that do. I drive past corning on a frequent basis from Western PA, take the 15, 13, etc related areas and have seen Amish on the traffic. It doesn't help there's only one lane on both sides. The Stolzfuses are common at another place I frequent in PA, there was a recent incident where one of their children died playing around a truck, but likely we all know there won't be any charges.

However, I have seen plenty of people who attempt to cut them off. Most of these are likely city drivers all the time. They look like they're from NYC, WV, some place that they're accustomed to driving quickly.

Sheriff's deputies have charged the driver of a car who attempted to pass a tractor and collided with a van carrying the farmers with five counts of criminally negligent homicide and with driving while intoxicated

ugh. fuck hope the bastard gets the chair.

He got charged with DUI, so it's a safe bet he was sloshed....

Sounds like maybe an Amish wasn't driving, but someone from "Cornell Cooperative Extension" which is an agricultural assistance division of a University or County.

Yeah, it's an outreach program that works with the locals, particularly with farm related business. It's not surprising the Amish are in there since there's a high presence of them in the local area once outside of downtown Ithaca.

WTF...that tractor driver should NOT have been on a highway with a 70MPH speed limit.

err why not?

tractors have to get around. in farming areas they are on teh road. it was a country road not a fucking tollway

I will say that the farmer should have done his best to find another way. but there are not roads everywhere..

Thousands of drunk driving accidents a year. It fits right in, driver is impaired, drives badly, has accident, causes harm.

It is a reminder why I support mandatory breathalyzers in all cars - a minor inconvenience and expense to prevent most of these accidents.

This is the time to mention that - when people aren't paying attention to the harm of the crashes, they tend to be ideological and say 'it's too much whatever'.

Oh wow.

I don't think I knew they had vans that would hold 14 people, I was thinking like a minivan.

Long wheelbase, full size, Ford, Chevy, GMC and Dodge vans since forever. You've seen plenty of them, you've just forgotten that you have.
