5:4 is ideal for portrait orientation of standard documents and thus web pages too and also vertical arcade games. In landscape orientation it just gives you more height -roughly the size of two task bars, so could be an advantage for still leaving the 4:3 area for dynamic use (given task bar and other such potential control bars are static and thus steal area from an actual 4:3 display). Otherwise it is queer and can lead to problems when the display fails to offer a mode for maintaining the correct aspect ratio and the viddy card drivers likewise (as in the case of ATI).
wider is better. i like the wider screen. better for when you have 2 windows side by side,
for example your main program and a tutorial or reference program on the side.
4:3 is better, if only because most of the standard resolutions are 4:3 and it's a real pain to get them to scale properly without stretching on a 5:4 LCD.
