5:4 is ideal for portrait orientation of standard documents and thus web pages too and also vertical arcade games. In landscape orientation it just gives you more height -roughly the size of two task bars, so could be an advantage for still leaving the 4:3 area for dynamic use (given task bar and other such potential control bars are static and thus steal area from an actual 4:3 display). Otherwise it is queer and can lead to problems when the display fails to offer a mode for maintaining the correct aspect ratio and the viddy card drivers likewise (as in the case of ATI).

The thing with Plasmas and LCD TV's is that they have rectangular pixels no square. So this doesn't matter so much The TV's actual Shape is 16:9

5:4 or 4:3 ...Why bothers buying these? These screen sizes are fading out in a year, or two, max! We're in a mid of HD era, go with WS sizes.

wider is better. i like the wider screen. better for when you have 2 windows side by side,
for example your main program and a tutorial or reference program on the side.

4:3 is better, if only because most of the standard resolutions are 4:3 and it's a real pain to get them to scale properly without stretching on a 5:4 LCD.
