wtf? how the hell do those things work? that is awesome! and is the plug for it the optical cable thingie?

yea, i was thinking of the deffinition of a 5.1 surround sound with 5 speakers and a sub, headphones can give the effect of 5.1 i believe, but wont actually be 5.1 thats all i was saying.

I remember reading about some headphones that had multiple drivers to put a five channel experience in something that inherently gives a 2 channel experience, at the time of reading they were almost ready for market although I have no clue as to the status of them currently.

That being said, I don't know of any 2 channel headphones that I would buy under $100 let alone 5 channel headphones under $50.

I'd definitely be interested in the 5.1 wireless headphones... My sennheiser wireless phones broke on me (transmitter and batteries and one can still work perfectly though... just the wire in the headset broke), and I'd love to get a new pair.

i have a set of the zalmans also, i love em, bought them off hardforums for 35 bucks, i hvae 5.1 speakers and 5.1 headphones and the headphones are so much better than the speakers unless they are cranked WAY up which is annoying. i can hear every movement in fps games with those zalmans and what most people dont realize that sound is VERY important in a game, cant shoot what ya cant hear. sound is everything in FPS games and then some.

they even have two different amp models for the zalmans that give it that extra thump.

and they sound good for music too.

Surround Sound Headphones

I have these, and I'm very impressed with them. I have the "Mentor True 5.1 Suround USB-Pro Headphone". For their price, they're quite nice.

Of course I was skeptical, but they somehow do a nice job of emulating surround sound. I watched The Two Towers with them on and it really brought the movie to life compared to other headphones. Just plug them into your USB port, and they work. No software, or even a sound card is required.

Must we go over this again?

Up your budget a little ($75 or so), pick up a decent set of good quality cans (Sennheiser & Grado both have options in that price range) & enjoy some real quality sound.

Stay away from the garbage.

The sennheiser HD-580's were available with a Pro Logic decoder/amplifer unit for a while, but not 5.1. Really though, for headphones, there's no point in having more than one driver because there is no space over your ear to reflect sound and whatnot. Therefore you're left with only processing to simulate the equalization differences or reverb that you would expect each channel to have. Putting more drivers in will do nothing without processing to go with it, and if you're relying completely on processing to begin with, the drivers have no point at all. They're just snake oil for your ears. But like everyone's said, unless this is for gaming where you don't care about sound quality and only about the surround-ness, then just get some stereo headphones.

i am not really a heavy gamer, but for coutnerstirke at least no speakers can match my hd-580. for movies, dolby headphone works very well. most of the stuff i watch isnt action, so i dont really need room shattering bass either (but i do enjoy tonally accurate controlled bass)

I have "normal" headphones and can tell when stuff is behind me in FPS games... 5.1 headphones are a gimmick in my opinion, and you probably look like a freak with them on.
