I am making a new wish list just to see what a new computer will cost me if I decide to do it. I was wondering if there are any bands or any music for that matter that is encoded into 5.1 sound on the CD or in an MP3 format? Can mp3's even do 5.1? I don't want to buy 5.1 speakers if there isn't any music that is encoded that way. I could image drums going around your head like banging on the toms or whatever, but I'm not sure if any bands can and/or do that. Thanks for your time.

The problem here, is that CDs are only stereo. You can get 7.1 surround on music DVDs, but I'm not sure how they encode them. It's possible, I'm sure. But you'll need a music guy to tell you for sure.

yeah stereo is left and right. If you want 5.1, go with DVD-Audio (Creative has a player app that will work with a DVD-ROM).

It seems possible that some MP3s are in 5.1 or 7.1; but they would have to have been straight created that way. Anything extracted from a CD would be in 2.1.

As a note, some programs will play the stereo music out of all the speakers on surround, but it would be something like...all the left side speakers have the left stero channel, and all the right side ones do the right stereo channel.

I heard that Nine Inch Nails released a DVD version of their latest album that is 5.1. Other than that I think music recorded in 5.1 is very rare, but that could change if DVD audio catches on. That will take a while though so right now 5.1 is just for movies and games.

not 2.1 but 2.0, there's no subwoofer track on CD's :)

A Friend of mine's dad is actually taking old records and then remixing them in 5.1 surround. Dont ask me how, but I think thats pretty sweet.
