5.0 ghz processor

Make your prediction here.

When do you think we'll see 5.0 ghz processors (retail not O/C'd).

Seems the 2-3 gig mark has been pretty comfortable for everyone. Any big push/rush for 5 ghz?

I don't think that's the direction they seem to be headed, next gen chips will be multicore instead of higher clockspeeds. Upping speeds would only exacerbate the already-bad heat problem, and BTX can only help so much... at least, as I understand it. Maybe someone from CPU/Processors will step in with an expert look at it 😛

I originally put this in OT just for general conversation and speculation, but the mods moved it here. I was trying to keep it away from the real serious questions in the CPU forum... Oh well.

I couldn't care less if a 5ghz chip happens in the next couple years, I would rather have a 2 core CPU with strong IPC and a fully supporting OS thanks.

I think heat will be too much of problem when operating at these speeds. Until they revolutionize heat dissipation, either with new technology or with CPU redesign, we will not see the 5GHz barrier broken.

My guess is another 5-10 years.

Nanotechnology should help by then.

A year ago I would have thought we'd see it in another 2-3 years tops. Now I'm not so sure. Intel's Prescott runs crazy hot and looks like it's got less of a future than the types of designs everyone else is doing (Athlon 64, PowerPC stuff, and even the Pentium Pro...err, Pentium-M).

Hmm either it isn't goig to happen or its going to happen in thenext 2-3 years. I dont think it will happen heat is too much of an issue. IIRC people right now have prescotts running around 5ghz but they are using like liquid nitrogen cooling and stiff.

I think though that dual core will hit before 5ghz does.

I don't see it happening anytime soon either. Both Intel and AMD are going to move toward dual cpu mobos rather than higher clock speeds.

Yeah, seems like the long pipeline, crazy high MHz thing is losing out to the shorter pipelines.

Personally, I think Intel made a mistake with the P4 design, and a LOT of what they are doing now is a cover for being able to switch back

Part one is switching to processor numbers to hide the MHz. Eventually I bet they change back to something more like the Pentium M / PIII design for their desktop processors. As has been said, pretty much all other processors have found a shorter pipleine to be the sweet spot, I find it unlikely Intel will end up at a significantly different place.

In other words:
5.0 GHz processor prediction = 2007 or later.

Never? Scaling and netburst is dead. Too much heat and fake representation of chip capabilites.

Pentium 3..I mean Dothan desktop is the Intels future.

A 2.0 Dothan, with HT and 800-1000Mhz fsb added would kill a 4.0 Ghz presshot.

mid 2006 when the dual core AMD's reach dual 2600 LOL (each processor 2600 = 5200 but of course it won't be 100% efficient so it will probably be the equivalent to the high 4000's but time will tell.

"My guess is we will see dual-core P-M's from Intel before a 5GHz Prescott. "

Intel said they would make duel core prescott's. not p-m's, yes i agree p-m's seems a better choice for duel core with less heat and power consumption and the higher IPC, but maybe duel core's with prescott's hyperthreading seems more golden in Intels eyes.

BTW about a year or two ago Intel said a 10.25 Ghz chip code named "Nehalem" would follow Tejas in 2005.

Tejas gone, no word on Nehalem, but it seems likely that faced the chopper too.

Netburst was suppose to live for 10 years, here were are @ 4 almost out of breath.

Bob Comwell (somthing like that,Former Intel) who helped design the P4 said he felt the design was too complicated and that he wanted to take the p4 in different directions however managment wanted higher clocks. He said it was part of the reason he left Intel.

Im sure theres a video of this on a stamford web site i saw a while back.
