Turn-based. When the game's supposed to be a simulation of an entire civilization, winning or losing shouldn't be 90% dependent on click speed.

^This... Turn based please game developers if your reading.

Same goes for RPGs, please... enough with all the lousy action rpgs.

Give us a good story like Fallout 1/2 (before 3 turned it into a action game), Planescape torment, and Baldurs Gates 1/2 and Icewind dale. Skrew the graphics, hire some decent writers instead, because the reverse just doesnt work (so many crappy games that look good (graphics wise), but have boreing story = end up lousy games).

"4x would be Explore Expand Exploit Exterminate" per OP. :colbert:
I do all those things in Starcraft: Brood War. Every single game.
I don't see "resource management" and "4x" as being mutually exclusive.

Besides Sins of a Solar Empire(which I've never played) and Ages of Empires(the only one I played in the series was the original+expansion), what other examples of RTS 4x games are there? I may be missing out on an entire genre.

As i mentioned above, the Paradox grand strategy/4x games usually have the same real time system, although pausable and you can adjust the speed. I believe it's in Europa universalis series, Hearts of iron, Victoria, the upcoming Crusader kings 2, Sword of the stars (I haven't played all of these). I've grown to really like that system. Lets me ponder the grand decisions of my empire, or crank up the time when not much is going on.

I was also curious now about their upcoming game Warlock (Q2 2012), but it says it's turn based so seems like that's a different system:

I've never played HoMM, but this might be something to look into for you guys? I'm definitely keeping and eye on it.

No clue what this game is but it looks good. Maybe a cross between elemental war and age of wonders ?
