Hmmm $8.49 shipping + tax. Not exactly FAR, but still cheap. I ordered one.

Found no +R's on DVDRHelp for Lead Data. Found 3 of the -R's for Lead Data (1 was 4X and 2 were 1X) and they all were rated good in all categories. Good Luck! :)

I got these and they only burn at 2.4X. The label says Promedia 2.4-4X. I already sent in the rebate so I hope they didn't ship me the wrong product.

Note that as you see other free after rebate items on this site, the fine print on the PC Mall rebate forms say only one rebate per week.

An Anandtech thread for the other PC Mall FAR items is here. Don't get me wrong on this, I'm not slamming. If it weren't for this particular posting, I'd have not found any of this. Also, eCost seems to be the same company and has some similar FAR items. Here's the thread. Wonder why you couldn't do a PCMall & eCost in the same week? You'd have shipping from both.

The BMI website is here
I've not found any good references to the quality of this media except for this at amazon that may or may not apply (this review is for DVD-R, only has two reviews, and is based on the reply above saying that it is Promedia).

I got these DVD's today.
I don't think they're very good quality. They say 4x, but my Liteon only burns them at 2.4x. First thing I noticed, is you can see through them. My Memorex DVD+RW's and Khypermedia DVD-R's don't pass any light through at all.
They have VERY high PI error rates according to KProbe. MUCH worse than Memorex DVD+RW.

The worst part... they don't play on my main RCA DRS7000N at all. I have another DRS7000N which will play the DVD, but makes funny noises like the laser keeps mistracking. My Oritron DVD player will play it, but also makes noises like it's mistracking. The only DVD player that seems to like them is my JVC XV-N55SL. In contrast, Memorex DVD+RW and Khypermedia DVD-R plays perfectly in even my main RCA player.

Would burning at 1X make any difference?

Mine came yesterday. There is an etching on each disk near the hole that reads "DVD+R 4.7GB 4X". However Nero will only burn them at 2.4X on my NEC 1100A. So far they play back fine on my Apex AD-1000.

I am tempted to order another spindle next week.

I emailed PCMall and the CSR that replied to me said that they WILL honor rebates for 1 pack per week.
You'll probably have to fight to get more than 1 rebate though. Worse yet, some people think it'll be a fight just getting this ONE rebate!

I'm starting to think the laser is just weak on my one RCA DVD player because the other one does play these DVD's with no problems other than making funny noises that I have to put my ear near it to hear.

Does anyone know what the acceptable error rates are? I've read something about PI should be less than 280. When reading the DVD at 1X in my Liteon, there were a ton of PI errors, but none exceeding the value of 280.

Bought a pack in their Santa Monica store on Sunday after seeing them in their L. A. Times ad, $19.99 - $20 MIR = $0.00, they had some in more stock.
The label on the 25 pack I got is ProMedia, although the receipt says BMI.

Also in the ad was a Logitech Cordless USB / PS2 3 Button Mouse free after a $15 MIR.

I got the 25 pack yesterday from PCMall. The discs *are* 2.4x, not 2.4x-4x as advertised (DVDINFOPro):

Media Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID MEDIA ID001
Format Capacity Not Formatted
Free Blocks 405405696
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Book Type DVD+R
Media Type DVD+R
Media Id Code Speed 2.4x 3324KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
Data area starting sector 30000h
Linear Density 0.267um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 1

What a rip-off. I don't know how it's even possible to burn these at 4x unless you have a hacked firmware. And I doubt that the discs would even then burn reliably at 4x. Nero 6 shows 2.4x for both drives I have right now: an Optorite DD0201 and a Lite-On 411S.

Just for big happy fun, I called PCMall trying to get a fix. The customer service person would set up an RMA after I spoke to a tech. The tech was *simply amazed* that DVD+Rs come in 2.4x speed. Big help. I had to explain that DVD-Rs come in 1x, 2x and 4x speeds, and DVD+Rs come in 2.4x and 4x speeds. His solution: order a different brand. Geebus. The rebate better come on these discs. $10 for 25 is really pushing it. I know Lead Data makes 4x DVD+Rs. Even Fry's sells those. This is a scam at PCMall/BMI to dump old discs at an inflated price.

Actually, if you look on the bottom of them, near the spindle but still in the purple area, you will see "4X".
I've never heard of anyone able to burn them at 4X, but apparently LeadData somehow intended for them to be 4X discs.

:D manufacturing error, but useless for the advertised speed since the media descriptor is wrong. These should have been sold as 2.4x, but probably wouldn't have sold for the price they charged.

It seems to be common practice now for folks selling no-name DVD blanks to market them as "YX-ZX", "Y" being the rated speed, "Z" being the maximum speed that can be achieved on some equipment, usually with hacked firmware.

I bought a lot of DVD-R 1X media that other folks successfully were burning at 2X, and I guess after reading all those posts, somebody figured that they ought to be able to cash in on that sort of trend.

I don't have a problem with this at all, it seems pretty clear to me that when a disc carries a double rating, the speed you will get is hardware dependent and may exceed the original engineering specs. Otherwise, what would you suppose is the difference between "4X" rated media and "2.4X-4X"?

Anyway, even the before rebate price is reasonable, with the rebate included, it is an absolute steal. If you're not happy, you could probably eBay them, less the discs you burned, and still do very well.

Just my 2¢.
