An update on the discs. i've burned 58 discs, 16 had read errors. only thing is that these discs don't work well as dvd movie discs since they keep skipping when playing them back on a dvd player.

I use the ritek -r and a DL NEC burner.. 2510

They play great in my player. I have an old Toshiba that wont play ANYTHING, inlcuding CDR's, but every other player I have tried works great.

Burning successfull DVD movies seem to be the most critical application for media. Only top quality media does this reliably, like Memorex. The generic media skimps on the dye. This lack of dye is what causes the laser to lose its track and skip, etc. Just turn over a new DVD disc and compare it with another manufacturer's media. You'll see that the brand-name disc has a deeper blue-purple color. I would advise everyone not to use these discs for movies, but for data they should be fine.

Jeez, you guys gotta learn already that companies like Memorex don't make their own media. There is no memorex made dvd's. They are all made from companies like verbatech, ritek and the like and rebranded. The best is to buy the blank stuff that directly from the manufacturer.

I'm sorry, but you need to learn a thing or two about chemical and manufacturing plants. They can make various products with a differentiation in quality. At higher speeds they get more output, but many times it sacrifices quality. Using a cheaper dye or less dye also saves them a lot of money $$$$$. Not all discs made in the same line will have the same quality. Welcome to the real world. Anyone that has even on eye can see the difference in dye that I'm refering to. Pretty straight foward....

BTW, I just received these discs and noted that they appear to have less dye than the generic CompUSA's that I have laying around. Don't expect a miracle product...

If you must buy cheap dvd media, buy ritek. They aren't THE cheapest, but they are cheap enough and have very high quality for the price.

respectfully disagree with that
od currently has deal on b1g1f on od 50pk dvd+r
they are ritek 02
only burn @ 2.4x in hp 300n (nec 1100a - unflashed)
pop out ritek, put in ricoh/mcc
look at burn window again, and it has changed to 4x

I bought a 30 pack of avb's a couple months ago and I had/have BAD luck with them. On an NEC 1300a with the lasteset firmware some refused to write @ 4x. A couple had flaws in the media, the disk had what looked like a pin point gap in the write area. A couple were ruined because of flakes of media stuck to the bottom. Most of the data disks I burned returned crc errors when I try to recopy files from them. The movies I burned seemed to play ok, I burned all of them at 2X. I left a review and newegg decided not to post it for some reason 🙁 .

heres a better deal:

dvd media

check out the ratings on these dvds and others here:
dvd ratings

these have had a fairly good reputation for burning dvds.
If you want the BEST, then go with "Taiyo Yuden DVD-R".....it'll cost ya, but you'll have a 99% success rate with these and are extremely compatible with most dvd players. These particular dvds are a legend for their reliability and quality control standards. You're gonna pay out on average 2X as much for these, but you're pretty much almost guaranteed no coasters, as it is rare.

If ppl don't know by now, most dvds like memorex, sony, OD, etc.....are rebadged dvds from different companies. These rebadged dvds can be good if they come from a good plant with high quality control, therefore ppl rave about them. But then, they can change companies/factories to lower thier costs and the quality usually goes too, resulting in coasters. Just because you had some good Memorex dvds doesnt mean Memorex is always gonna make good dvds, it just might be that the factory they hired to make thier dvds may have had good quality control for the batches they ordered. But then Memorex may change to another factory to lower cost, which in turn can have poorer quality control resulting in not a good dye mixture with an end result of bad dvds rebadged as Memorex or whatever.

Don't go on the name brand of the dvd, use a program to identify what factory made your media ie: dvd identifier to find out if you got good media or not.

This nonsense of "oh memorex, tdk or sony is the best dvd media i ever used.....blah blah blah..." Whatever, you won't be saying the minute they change to a crappy factory and all of a sudden your dvd's have errors, skip and fail to burn.

Also, your your eyes and look at the dye on the dvd. Most importantly, good dvd media has dye that is consistent to the very edge of a dvd. Bad dvd dye will be flaky on the edges or not evenly distributed.

No offense to the OP, but I would not buy the ones listed here from Newegg unless they were Prodisc, Ridata (Ritek G04's) or Taiyo Yudens.

is this legitimate?

"Recognition from the Pioneer Class A Lab requires passing more than 100 strict inspections on the product as well as the manufacturing processes. So far, only few DVD-R manufacturers who are capable of passing the various Pioneer examinations are qualified for this recognition."

How would this media compare to G04s or Taiyo Yudens?

Pioneer Class A media

I read that this media (Pioneer) is a tier 1 media, in fatc the site siad it is the best period!!!. I thought I saved the site, not able to find it, guess I was wrong.
I do know that they said this media was the absolute best. They tested it somehow. They gave ritek second tier status

anyone else been able to find some info on this pro-disc media and whether the "Pioneer class A" certification actually means anything:

I found what looks to be a good deal for 8x DVD+R but just don't know if this is actually good media:

8x DVD+R ProDisc Media
