Mom Says Youngster Has Male Brain

METHUEN, Mass. -- A fourth-grader who was attending a Massachusetts elementary school as a girl before February vacation has returned to school as a boy.

The parents of the 9-year-old child said the youngster was born with the body of a girl, but the brain of a boy.

They have asked that he be referred to and treated as a boy by teachers and other students, and school officials are accommodating the request. The parents have even changed the child's name.

The child's mother told The Eagle-Tribune that the family made the decision after consulting with medical professionals. She said the child is still biologically a girl.

The mother has requested that the family not be identified to protect the child.

School Superintendent C. Phillip Littlefield said there is nothing harmful about the child being in the school.

It's a big deal because when that kid grows up and finds out... do you know how incredibly terrible that will be? I mean can you grasp the thought of your entire life being a lie and the world being completely different?

The concept of a brain having a gender is just ridiculous.
 
The news story is worded vaguely. Sounds like a hormonal problem. There's a short period of child development where if inadequate amounts of hormones are in the system, the girl parts don't turn into guy parts. There is a rumor that the same is true of jamie lee curtis, in fact. Though I never did the research to find out more.

It is possible to be born with the brain of the "wrong sex." It's a complex issue, and the little girl probably does not feel very comfortable as a girl. At age 9, I imagine its difficult for her to have a complete picture of her sexual identity, but if she feels like a boy and believes that she is a boy, trapped in a girl's body, and that medical professionals have been consulted, then I support the parents' decision.

You sir are an idiot. The brain knows whether it's male or female, how else to you think these things happen? Sex is biological, gender is constructed by outside influences. Often times, parents and doctors choose the incorrect sex simply based on unclear external genitalia. They choose a girl when the person is truly a boy. Do some reading, go to college, it helps.

I think these things happen because people are too open to the possibility that these things can happen. As a kid once said, "Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina". What's in the head doesn't matter, it's what's in the pants.
 
Wow, the amount of ignorance here is freaking incredible. Have any of you pondered the possibility that this "girl" should have been born as a boy? That her hormonal levels are similar to that of a boy. That certain people are born the wrong way and that medical science can fix these gender problems? Or do you all think that the "medical professionals" are pushing some sort of gay agenda?

Just my two cents, I don't know anyone in this predicament but I do now that these anomalies exist in our society.

Me as well, except that they did the sex change as soon as the boy was born. I don't remember much about being in the 4th grade, but I was incredibly aware of my surroundings. I think I would go 'wtf' if my mom decided she wanted a son without asking me about it, at least the article doesn't imply the kid said anything about it.

The kids will just rip the girl apart, at any rate.

Yes, you're wrong. And who said anything about throwing out science, science determines sex based on hormones and chromosomes. In this case there was an errow with one or both. The brain can be male however the necessary hormones were lacking to cause the external male genialia to develop.
