4TB Red Review

I didn’t know about this version until I saw the review, and it’s not even up at WD’s website yet.

Those HD Tune scores are way too fast for a 5400RPM drive, including the great 12.7ms access time. I think this drive is actually 7200RPM.

Very strange. No other links except those that lead back to yours. Also, first review of WD Black on StorageReview.com. I wonder if this is a Black drive? Surely not?

The model number shown in the benchmarks in that review is NOT for a Red drive. It's for a 7200 rpm RE drive.

Someone somewhere has deliberately falsified something. Either the review was written in good faith, but the drive supplier relabelled the drive with a false label, or the review is a fabrication.

Not to mention no true photo of the drive (2TB model shown). I guess it could be a stolen model that should not have hit the market or review stations yet.

Yeah, I think the review is wrong. This article says that WD won't release a 4 TB Red until Q3. I've heard the 3 TB Reds have been having issues so hopefully they'll get those problems worked out.

Lots of reports of DOAs and drives dying and my understanding is that it was affecting the 3 TB models. I am in the process of building a new home server and was going to use the 3 TB Reds until I heard of these issues.

Do you have to use all of the same drive in a NAS build? I want to start buying WD Red drives but I don't have the budget to replace my current 3 drives (2x Seagate 7200RPM 2TB + 1x WD Green 2TB).

Well this is certainly more reassuring to hear from you and Engineer that you've had good luck.

If you read the Amazon reviews for the Red series, the negative reviews all apparently apply to the 3 TB model. Many reports of DOAs and a few reports of them dying quickly as well. I've been trying to get more specific information as well. I had to replace a dying drive a few weeks ago and I went with a 2 TB Red and it has been really solid and surprisingly fast. I got scared off by the 3 TB issues.

Also, in addition to Amazon, the Newegg reviews are very mixed and reports high number of DOAs:

You also need to take NewEgg hard drive reviews with a bit of a grain of salt. NewEgg has a terrible track record with their hard drive packaging for shipping, so I'm not surprised about having lots of DOA or quick-to-die drives.

I've got eight of the 3TB drives in my server running in RAID6. I picked mine up from NCIX (I live near the stores) in person haven't had any issues so far.

Yeah, I was going to mention that many of the reviews mention Newegg's terrible packaging. Amazon's packaging is solid though, and that's what worried me.
