4Runner or GX460

No, I test drove neither yet. I am pretty sure once I drive the GX, I'll buy it instantly. I am not ready just yet for that.

2 or 3 years old off lease. That's what I'd buy instead of a new 4Runner.

I didn't realize the advantage of KDSS on road. Makes sense as it can effectively be stiffer than normal sway bar. Thanks!

Ironically I have test-driven a 460 but I guess without a frame of reference I just called the ride "tall body-on-frame SUV". My only comparison point is a late model Suburban.

No, I am considering getting a new GX460.

My bad, I read NutBucket's post and attributed it to you.

And all this time I thought the numbers in the OP were mileage...oops. Have you test driven them both?

As a tangent...the Lexus dealership experience is generally superb. Service/etc is the best I have experienced at a dealer.

Seconded.

Lexus dealerships are top notch. Way better than Toyota and worlds above any of the big three or any other non-luxury brand.

A CPO Land Cruiser is going to be at least $65k. Add $10k or so for an LX. I've looked.

There's a grand total of 4 CPO Land Cruisers within 200 miles of LA LOL

I don't know about CPO but I found the opposite with regular used LX570 and Land Cruiser around here. Used LX570 are lot more common and cheaper than equivalent Land Cruisers. It was the same with the LX470. Nice 3 year old LX570 seem to go for around $50k.

I searched autotrader and within 200 miles of me there are 20 LX570 for sale between model year 2015 and 2017. The 2016s are listed in the $75k range. There are a few 2015s with 40-50k miles on them and they are in the $55k range.

This is in Southern California, the car capital of the world.

You're right that most nice 2015 are in the $55k range. 2014 are in the $50k or below range. But when I said around $50k, I was implying +~ couple thousand dollars. Here's CPO 2015 LX570 with 36k miles for $55k. https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inven...ithinSite_false_0&zip=30301#listing=215127867

Sorry for uneducated question, but why 570 over 460?

I had a whole bunch of stuff typed up for you but Anandtech is accusing me of spam and wouldn't let me post.

In short, in addition to JCH13's post, the 200-series is the heavy duty chassis and the 150-series is the light duty chassis. Bigger steering assembly, massive rear differential, double boxed frame, thicker windshield, stainless exhaust, etc etc.

It is bigger too and much more posh. I think the 2016 and on is the one to have though. It has the sportier updated look to the exterior and the updated dash and interior. They are really nice inside. Very comfortable.

Thanks, it helps. Question I have now is do I need this for 99.9% on road driving? I stronlgy assume, NO.

lol not at all.

It's just awesome - I mostly want one simply because they exist.
Same reason I want one. It's a beast. But that gas mileage. Holy crap. I get around 11 miles a gallon driving in the city with LX470. I think the LX570 is similar in gas mileage.

I get 11-13 city in my GX470, so I probably wouldn't notice a difference 😛

"Maybe", but as I wrote, it's a mechanical thing subject to wear like shocks, so it inevitably isn't going to work as well the older it gets, nor will any flexible joints, bushings, ball joints, etc in it.

That's not to suggest the 4Runner won't also need sway bar end links, bushings, etc. Anything lifted that goes off-road is going to need more than its share of refurbishment over time, but bushings and end links tend to only cost $25 DIY. What does that KDSS system's components cost? I'm suspecting in the neighborhood of $1K... though if you really like it then it's worth it spread over several years of use.
If an argumentative Toyota/Lexus person existed, they would be none too pleased with your dim assessment of the reliability of their rocks. My brother is an old 4Runner nut from way, way back. He would never venture nearly as far off road in any other branded vehicle; he's watched Jeeps, well... My nutty van has the 2GR-FKS which has four personalities, it's truly schizophrenic. It's pretty new to put all that together, but it's a Toy, I have no worries.
