Info 4k / 8K Ultra-Short-Throw Laser Projector vs 55" QLED /OLED TV

My LED 4K TV is in its final days after using for 12+ years. When it fully dies I am confused about replacing it with a 4k / 8K Ultra-Short-Throw Laser Projector or a QLED / OLED TV.

My living room is small. I have a Dolby Atmos soundbar at home. I currently use an Android TV Box to play IPTV content, movies, music etc.

Would I still be forced to use an external Android TV Box to play IPTV content if I got for a UST laser projector? I know almost all new TVs natively support 4K Dolby Atmos decoding and would prefer that type of setting with a UST laser projector.

Is the laser projector technology mature enough and worth the money to buy one in 2025? What would you suggest?

Dimensions of the room and desired image size? Also do you have full lighting control?

20 ft x 15 ft.

I can switch on and off the single LED light bulb in the room. Not a smart bulb that can be controlled by a mobile app or remote. But can consider that!

Projectors don't do sound. Is the 20ft where the display is or the 15 ft? How big a screen are you looking for. If you don't have a sound system, just get a TV. Light control is more about windows.

Atmos means nothing if you are just using a sound bar.

I will be able to connect the laser projector to my sound bar. My question is regarding how will I play the IPTV, Youtube etc content? Do I need an external Android TV box / Apple TV / SHIELD TV Pro Streaming Media Player etc to play such content? Will a projector have those content decoding capabilities?

15ft is where the display will be.

No, a projector is just a display, like your PC monitor. You need a source for it, so the android box would be the source.

What screen size are you aiming for? On that 15' wall do you have anything blocking the wall? Assuming you go with projector you would need to mount a screen to the wall. A 10' wide screen is about 134" diagonal, assuming 16:9 ratio.

70" or 80" is enough. The below layout is what I have in mind if I go for a projector. Thanks.

Thanks. Is LG not using its own OS? I need something that uses Google TV or can inbstall android apps. I know Sony, Samsung et does. Not sure about LG.

Like I said, just an example. You can reasearch based on your needs. There are several tiers within each brand so you have to pick which one is acceptable.

LG is on WebOS, they got it from HP's burning crater that was HP TouchPad. It is still linux based and they do have a decent app store and built in IPTV channels.

Samsung has it's own OS Tizen and it's a mess.

I'd rather the TV ran Tizen and use an android dongle if it came to that. I've had worse experiences with Google TV bugs and practically none with Tizen, plus it boots so much faster.

When you get an aftermarket dongle, job #1 for the developer is making the OS run as well as the hardware allows. Built into TVs, it's more of a line item feature.

Probably on standby mode vs cold boot.
