$ 499 laptops at Gateway.com

I have the previous version of that laptop, the NX260, but with a Core 2 Duo chip. It's pretty decent. Just make sure you get the glossy screen; the matte screen is TERRIBLE.

Getting the "glossy" screen isn't an option. 🙁

Good price. It would be great if it was running windows XP instead of Vista, you wouldn't even need to get extra RAM, then. I have a machine a work running Vista without Aero, with 512MB of RAM, and its pretty slow - especially playing card games. The saem computer was fine running windows XP.

There are guides to optimizing (aka reducing memory load) of Vista... if ya can, see if you can help turn off features you may not need.

These are pretty bad. The good prices you refer to all have Celeron Ms. I wouldn't accept anything other than a dual core system these days.

Matte screen = crap. I don't know why their matte screens are so bad. I've had and worked on several other Gateway laptops with glossy screens and they are all fabulous. The matte screen has really bad viewing angles and just doesn't look that great. I have it on a stand next to my 20" Dell monitor and the Dell blows it away.

Since it's only sporting Vista Basic the extra RAM isn't as important as it would be if it were running, say, Vista Premium w/Aero.

Still something to get down the road though.
