48C/118F Too hot?

I have the AMD Athlon XP 1700XP+ and think that 48C is a little too hot...

Granted I got the retail processor (w/fan and heatsink) I have a few questions...

Can I take the pad off the heatsink and not use any paste? Would that help?

If not, can I take the pad off and use some artic silver to get better results?

Thanks...

Taking off the pad and adding AS2 got my 1800+ from 48C to to 40C, so ditch the pad, its not a very good pad, it melts and dose a pretty bad job over all on cooling. You *HAVE* to use paste though, no if and or buts.

Whatever you do, use a thermal paste in between the HSF and CPU to make sure that there's contact in between the core and teh surface of the HSF.

Not much. Apply some on the hsf and wipe it away with your fingers wrapped with plastic bag. Then, apply a thin film over the core will do. 🙂
