4890 vs. 5770 & 5830

Hello,

My HD4890 card has recently stopped working and i still have it on warrenty, But they no longer sell 4890s anymore so they have offered me a replacement card which is the 5770.

From what i have read on various forums the 5770 is actually a downgrade. I'm starting to wonder if i should push for them to give me a 5830 as it's much closer to a 4890 then the 5770. I don't want to settle for a downgrade. I have also been looking at the 5850 and it is the only card above the 4890 out of the previously stated cards.

My current system spec is;
Windows 7 ultimate.
Q6600 Quad 2.33Ghz Processer.
4gb RAM.
1000w PSU

Any advice and tips on how to argue for the 5830 or 5850 would be appreciated as i think they are offering me a downgrade.

5770 is a downgrade in performance, although it has DX11

The minimum upgrade would be a 5850, 5830 is really poor IMO

You don't have much argument for a 5850, its a hands-down much better card than the 4890. The 5830 you'd be totally justified in asking for in that even that card is consistently slower than the 4890, even if by a negligible margin.

I'm no expert at bargaining for something like this, but perhaps you could try and ask for a 5850 and if they give you one, great. If they put up a fight about a 5850, back down and ask for a 5830 (if they don't offer it to you first), using the very arguments already brought up (that the 5770 is a definite downgrade and even the 5830 is consistently slower than your 4890).

At the end of the day, even if you're "stuck" with a 5770 it really isn't that bad of a card (particularly at lower resolutions should you be gaming at 1680x1050 or lower). It should run cooler/quieter/less power and if you're willing to overclock, it should be able to close that performance gap some as hitting 1000MHz on the core isn't out of the question.

4890 is clearly the faster card. They might be trynig to give you a replacement card that costs the same as you can buy a 4890 now perhaps. But I would push for the 5830 since they are nearly identical in performance. Tell them that you should get a card that performs the same as the one you have now.

I know that the 5850 is a bit of a upgrade, But under warenty terms they should not provide a downgrade regardless of the price and should provide a equal, if not, An upgrade regardless of price.

They are not allowed to use features of the new card that my old card didnt have to provide me with a downgrade as i did not ask for them on my old card (if that makes sense). And they should base the replacement on stock values and not on overclocking values.

So you think i should push for the 5850? If they are not having any of it, Then back down to a 5830?

I run at 1900x1200 resolution and the margin of performance really starts to increase around that point.

5830 isn't poor. It's just that the price isn't attractive.

5830 has much higher minimum fps than 5770 does but average is about same or little higher on the 5830.

5830 would be a even trade in performance to your 4890. 5850 is asking too much I think.

The 5830 is long (12") maybe you could say it wont fit in your case and only a 5850 (10.5") will

5850 is the same length as a 4890 BTW

I actually love you for that fact, That might be the thing that can win the 5850 over for me.

They can just tell you to wait a month and give you another 4890 if they want, I don't know what company it is but i wouldn't care if the card didnt fit, id say you want the 5770 take it if not wait for a 4890. Dont be to greedy but it wasnt your fault the card died (or was it heh)

I would aim for a 5830. It's not a bad card, it's just priced too high for the performance.

-No, XFX's 5830 is 10.5" long, which is shorter than the ref. design but by no means anywhere in the ballpark of 5570. You're thinking of the propaganda photos distributed with the reviews. The actual product didn't turn out like that at all, and if you don't believe me just take a spin by newegg or anywhere else.

The 5830 doesn't appear to be a terrible card. It also appears to be a beast in CF mode, so if you did get one as a replacement, then that would be a very viable upgrade path for you in the future.

On the other hand, the 5830 does appear to be, on average, a bit slower than a 4890. I see techpowerup showing the 4890 at around 9&#37; faster (though that was using Catalyst 9.12 so that lead will probably have diminished). Conversely, you do get lower power consumption, lower temps and probably a quieter card.

Getting a 5830 seems to be a "fair" replacement. Getting the 5850 is certainly a big win for you, if you can manage it.
