I wonder if you can use your remaining 4890 card as a dedicated phsyx card,, then buy a GTX 580 with that 550 dollars

I dont know if this is possible,, anyone is this possible ?

No, tis not possible. PhysX only works with Nvidia cards.

NOt exactly, you can make a AMD card work with physx , just like I can use sli on my crossfire only board.

Edit: not saying you should ,but it is possible.

Did you even read what tweakboy wrote?

You can't use the 4890 as a PhysX card.

You need an Nvidia card in your system for PhysX to work and the Nvidia card must be the one doing the PhysX. An AMD card won't do it.

Yea he said buy a gtx580 and use the 4890 as a dedicated physx card?
And? I said you can do it, because you can.
Oh yeah? Really? This is news to me. Maybe you should provide sources.

Commonly speaking, it isn't going to happen. And you know this.

Although I hope you don't have things backwards in your brain. He could buy a GTX 580 and us that as a PhysX card with an HD4890, but that would just be stupid, wouldn't it?

If you boughta gtx580 and a 4890 , you would use the 4890 as a dedicated physx card with a hack.

Are you the only one that does not know this?

Count me in among the unknowing also..... infact, i think you are the only one that knows about this.

I'd get the 6870's with that board. I have the similar mb and wouldn't change it except if I rebuild everything. The same q9450(C1) here and it gets pretty hot @3,5-3,65, so I'm not overclocking the cards any.

The 6970 is rumored to launch @ 500ish and considering how well the 6870's scale in cf, they'll probably make a better buy than it. Whether the prices will go down for the 6870's-6850's, I cannot comment, but, like happy pointed, you can get 6870's @ 239AR which is basically MSRP iirc.

Use google. It is possible to use an Ati card for a physx card with some work but I wouldn't do it

Still never heard if it was out of warranty
Card is still under warranty period, however, I had replaced the stock coolers about a year ago, and in my infinite wisdom, while cleaning up for the family to be in for Thanksgiving, I threw away the stock coolers figuring I didn't need them anymore. :'(

.

I'm water cooled, the temps are actually very nice. But, no I don't O/C my cards as I really never saw the need. Let me qualify that statement, my CPU is water-cooled, the cards are air cooled as I couldn't justify the cost for the waterblocks on the GPU's considering I don't generally O/C my cards.

I guess my big thing is, I will probably overhaul this machine within the next year or so. So, my train of thought was, get a high end single GPU card and then when I upgrade pick up another for a Xfire/SLI type setup. The question is, as always...ATI or Nvidia...now I know that is really a loaded question...I've owned 90% ATI since the Radeon 8500. Questions in my mind are ATI = no Physx, but does that matter? It's just one of those I'm about to spend 500+ bucks and I want to be sure about my purchase ya know what I'm sayin? BTW, thanks to all those who've provided insight so far.

Couldn't you just switch the coolers around quick (I'm assuming they are the same board) and send the broken one back? Then you'd have better cooling on the one remaining anyway.

LOL, had I married any of my previous G/F's I would probably agree with you...those bitches was crazy! After 4 years with my wife, I can truly say, I don't know what I'd do without her. And, before you ask...yes, she does keep my balls in a glass jar next to our bed. :sneaky:

Hey...look at it from a positive POV...at least you get to see them once in a while...some guys never get to see their balls after the ceremony. :p

I don't quite have your problem, (nor your budget) but I'm also looking for a new video card...but in the <$200 range.
WTF happened to video cards in the past several years? I've don't remember there being so many problems with cards in years past. Nowadays, every forum has folks with a bazillion problems with ALL the different manufacturers, different chipset makers, different models, and variants of them.

Doesn't anyone make a GOOD video card that just runs right, straight out of the box?

Just get yourself another 4890 and put the difference cash to your next build man. It's likely that within a year all the current range won't be of interest anymore. If you get a 580 now, you'll spend all your money and it's also likely for that q9450 to be insufficient for it. If you'll get another in a year or so, it'll probably still be behind the solutions available then.

I understand the thinking here, and I would concur with the exception of one reason, it's not my money. So, it's not an issue of I have XX amount of dollars that I can just sock away for the next build. The person paying for the card said, tell me how much and I'll take care of it. ya dig?

Anyhow, I think I'm going to wait, see what the what is with AMD's new offerings and make a choice from there. Thanks to everyone for the advice and input!

Maybe increased usage of discrete graphics/BYO pc's? Hell, I remember when I built my first Athlon 900mhz, my buddy and I were going nuts because it wasn't posting. We swapped parts from his etc, etc....the culprit? A case riser was shorting the board :hmm:
