Hey I heard there was a problem with fan speed on some of the latest cards but I didn't think it affected the 4870x2. do I need to worry? catalyst 8.8 overclock to 780 MHz and 950 MHz for GPU and memory respectively. one core is at 86C with 0% activity. other core is at 57C with 0% activity. I don't see my other graphics card so I can't check the temp there.

If it's idle at 86c that's bad IMO. I'd up the fan speed. Use rivatuner or something similar.

He is running an x2, actually TWO x2 cards so they will be hotter. If memory serves the fan defaults to 27%. Try 40% and you should see drop to at least 60c if not more.

ok messed around with the OC feature as well and then I turned enable low scale hardware OC off while it was OCed and my catalyst now says it is clocked at 507 core and 500 memory... I can't revert it to default... wtf?

I'm figuring that is due to throttling because when I open cs source it bumps up to me original OC speeds but I've never seen it go down to 507 500. normal it throttles down to the normal default core speed of 750/900

I leave mine on at least 50% all the time and it doesn't bother me one bit. Of course we have 6 rigs so the room always has a hum to it :)

Perhaps you should get the 8.12 cat. It works fine for me. And the fan speed you can adjust manually from the cat-advanced-ATI overdrive. Just unlock it and manually adjust the fan speed. I also have difference of temps between the cards. The top one is cooler by 10-15c, but the hotter one never goes beyond 56c under load. I guess the two 120 mm pushing fresh air on them from the removable side of the case make this possible.

I'm using 8.12 now and I just set up fan profiles so I'm good on the fan front now but I'm still confused why crossfire isn't showing up..

Everything plugged correctly? If so, try removing the driver and the cat and do a re-install.

when I go into hardware I see 4 cores so it is operational, the bridge is linking the cards and it USED to be there... wtf

did a reinstall of ATI (used drive cleaner in safe mode and everything) and still no crossfire option. Is there any way to make sure the other card isn't damaged?

GPU-z sees 4 cores and for crossfire it says this:
1. Enabled (2 GPUs), Sideport On (Slave)
2. Disabled
3. Enabled (2 GPUs), Sideport Off
4. Enabled (2 GPUs), Sideport Off

I wish I knew also, but I'm pretty sure someone here can help.

You could remove one of the cards and test a single one to see if you get all the readings correct and repeat the operation for the second one alone as well. Maybe it's a issue with the bridge not the cards. By the way are u using one or two bridges?( just curious, I'm using one myself, I remember some pics with the two bridges connected but I don't know what difference could that make)

only 1 bridge... I don't know where the second would even connect. I think older cards have the two bridges but I'm just basing that on observations of pictures
