4870 x2 vs 2 gtx 260 SLI

ok which one would be better for gaming at 1920 X1080 or higher!

voted for the x2 because it is a single card versus having to stick 2 cards in the machine. 260 sli probably scales better though. Probably close enough in performance to make no difference besides the typical games that favor one company over another

*** edit, second thought i more strongly suggest the x2 since it has more vram and @ 1920x1200 your gonna want more of vram for upcoming titles

The 4870X2 has the benefit of using a single slot and is more power efficient than two GTX 260's. However, the GTX 260's are cheaper. If you're overclocking, get two GTX 260's as you'll be able to take them much further. I voted for the 260's because I would overclock the hell out of them .

If two gtx 260s turn out to be cheaper, then get those and SLI them, if you have a good SLI motherboard, otherwise the single card 4870X2 is a better choice.

Performance is pretty similar; if using 8xAA then HD4870 X2 is faster, but with any other setting (including 2560x1600 4xAA) GTX 260 SLI should be faster.

GTX 260 SLI has also these small arguments on it's side:
+Runs cooler
+Not as noisy as HD4870 X2
+Uses less wattage

If you have a SLi motherboard and the GTX cards are cheaper, get them for sure. Performance will be very similar between the two solutions, so just get the cheaper one.

Since you want the step-up option and a better warranty you already know what to get

Didn't you already write that you want a step-up option and a better warranty (hence the GTX260 SLi option)? Performance will be very similar between the two, it's basically two HD4870 1GB vs two GTX260 c216.

Just get what's cheaper. If both cost around the same, look at other features, like for example noise (the GTX260s seem to be quieter) or extra features - PhysX (more details in Mirror's Edge, Sacred 2, Cryostasis, GRAW2) and DX10.1 (implemented in Stalker: Clear Sky and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.).

It's your money, you get to choose. You got all the relevant information already.

I should Mention I can get the 2 gtx 260's and 4870 x2 for the same price. I dont care that much about the step up...... and visiontek has lifetime warrenty as well.

this is not in the poll but would a 4890 Crossfire setup be the best choice? its like $80 more over the 260's price.

If you are using an AMD CPU then I would definitely recommend getting a board with the 7xx chipset, which means getting the 4870.

I would not base my decision on the difference between the cards, but on the motherboards you are going to be using them with.

no i got a ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 . and a i7 920 at 2.66ghz not overclocked.

Then I don't think there is any reason to pick one over the other

4890 would be a performance boost though, you could possibly consider buying just 1 of them now and buy one later for XFire if paying 80$ more on the spot is a problem.
As far as I am aware it has the advantage of using less pwoer than the 4870 so that is a nice bonus.

I think the gt260 wins hands down in idle power consumption though, so if your computer is on all day without being used maybe that could save quite a few $ on your power bill.

I dont mind power consumption as I always turn off my systems. But for pure performance on my system is it worth the 260's or 4890's.

For pure performance the HD4890 CrossFire is the fastest. If you're looking for the absolute fastest around 400$ this is it. Now if it's worth the extra $$$ it's entirely up to you. In my opinion, unless you're gaming on a 30" 25x16 monitor, it's just not worth it.

The HD4870x2 and GTX260 SLi are pretty much tied. I'd say this is prefferable. Obviously, if yo're running something lower than 19x12 or 19x10, those two are overkill too. But do not look at performance, when deciding between the two, because it's pretty much equal. Also, I would advise you to read up on the shortcomings of CF and SLi.

If you're running a 22" or lower (I hope it's not something lower than it!), just get a HD4890 and be done with it. Hell, it will probably have enough punch for 19x12 screens to run everything smooth.
