I believe apoppin has tested?? Any Crysis/Warhead benchmarks??

Scouring the net to find benchmarks to no avail. Confirmed with ATI tech support this morning that 4870 X2 + 4870 1GB is possible. Would love to see benchmarks with and without the 4870 installed.

So it looks like I'll be testing.

I hate Newegg... it's too easy to submit an order :)

What I heard from apoppin, and he'll hate me for this, is that 4870X2 +48701 GB doesn't seem to make much if any difference vs 4870X2 +4870 512mb. Not sure when he will post his testresults though, might be a week, might be longer. I bet you know where to look :)

Yea I got that impression after reading one of his posts. Hopefully it will be worth something, if not, I'll use it for a Christmas build.

I talked to two different tech support guys today and both said the same thing, future drivers will improve performance dramatically. I never heard that one before.. ;)

hi

whatcha need?

i have Cat 8.9 Crysis benches at 16 x10 and 19x12 at Very High with NoAA/AF with my rig in sig; it is the GPU island flyby and each bench ran 3 times. The 3rd one was used as it was consistently the fastest for each video card.

CFx3 - 4870x2 + 4870/512MB
19x12 - 40.17/25/60
16x10 - 41.73/26/60

CFx3 - 4870x2 + 4870/1GB

19x12 - 40.83/25/61
16x10 - 41.95/26/61

:p

as a full comparison:

4870/512MB
19x12 - 20.41/16/25
16x10 - 24.80/20/31

4870/1GB
19x12 - 20.85/17/26
16x10 - 25.36/20/31

4870/X2
19x12 - 34.99/25/45
16x10 - 39.98/26/53

I like the fact that these results sum it all up.
The only question is whether or not you want X2 or X3....

:p

Hey apoppin, looking mainly for benchies with X2 as primary card, with and without 4870 1GB installed. The above scenaio then? Not much of a bump. I'm just wanting to play around so that's okay.

You want X2 benches?
- which ones? .. and don't say "all of them" :p
[i can direct you to the completed review this weekend]

i have a ten game suite benched with 4870x2, 4870-512, 4870-1GB, 4870x2+4870-512 [CFx3] and 4870x2+4870-1GB [CFx3] with rig in sig and mostly compared on 2 platforms - P35 and X48 MBs

CFX3 give some improvement over a single X2 .. mostly solid ... but underwhelming compared the scaling of an X2 over a single 4870
- and there is almost no difference - overall - between using a 512MB 4870 as the secondary linked adapter over using the 1GB version in CF-x3 with 4870x2
- it cost me $75 to find that out; but i am glad to have the information .. and the upgrade .. and now that i have the [small] performance delta between 4870/512 and 4870/1GB documented, i sold my 51MB version and will test solely with the 1GB card - especially for testing with a "true" pefectly-matched CF-x3.

Thanks for the offer, I can wait to see the full publish. Regardless of performance gains, I was surprised to see so little out there on this config. I ran Crysis benchies with the 4870 X2, my 1GB card comes tomorrow. I'm sure you saw this... these things chew up 8x AA. I saw maybe a single frame drop moving from 2x to 8x.

i don't think AA is that free :p

at any rate, that is the very reason i am exploring X3; there is SO little about it as you say and it appears to be better scaling than X2+X2 = CFx4 and it seems perfect for 19x12 with details and filtering fully maxed [then 8xMSAA appears attainable] .. not to mention my 850w OCZ has NP with 4870x3

i haven't spent much time with filtering in Crysis except awhile back with 16x12 resolution and a single HD4870 when i investigated performance impact of single/multiple settings with BFG10K .. i repeated my old test again just now [i have a single 4870 in my rig ATM and am double-checking something with Cat 8.9] and i see this:

16x12; Very high, No AA - 24.60
16x12; Very high, 8x AA - 19.58

that is what i meant by enabling 8xAA .. and i am only testing extremes - NoAA > 8xAA
- even your X2 has to contend with low FPS in the teens with any AA
--that is why i am hoping X3 has the extra to pull it off

did you notice any improvement going from Cat 8.9 to Cat 8.10 in Crysis? .. i am yet to install it .. tomorrow, i think

after i publish my current GPU comparison results including CF-X3, filtering is my next area of personal interest to explore
.. you guys stay just ahead of me :p

I saw a slight bump (75 pts) with 8.10 over 8.9 with Vantage, and no improvement with the few Crysis benchmarks I ran. That's a single X2 though. Glad to hear your 850W psu handles the config fine.
