I have an 8800gt and just need a smidge more performance so i can play my 24" at native resolution. Which would be better to get?

I saw newegg had the 4850 open boxes for $140, so that would basically be the same cost as a single 4870. Also, diamond has an overclocked version of the 4870 with 1.1Ghz ram to throw into the mix.

Would I be better getting a single 4870 or crossfiring the 4850's? I have a 790fx board with 4 pci-e slots (one used by raid card).

4850CF > Single 4870. But I would imagine you'd be fine with a single 4870.

What would you recommend? Should I even consider the 4870x2 since it gives you a usable frame buffer of 1GB? Not sure if any games need that in the next year for 1920x1200? I usually play at 1680x1050 though.

My two 4850's do out run my 4870, but it is not really noticable and if you do get a single 4870 you can add another later on if you need it...
