1.Newest drivers, re-check your wiring from the PSU to the graphics card. make sure you are using the appropriate connections on the appropriate rail.

2.Poor ram speed, timings, latency, PCI-E lanes not in 16x mode, out-of-date OS & hotfixes, and HDD clutter can slow your performance as well.

3.Overclock your cpu/gpu for more performance. Use caution and read up first.

You're considering returning your card after running an ancient synthetic benchmark? 3dmark06 is pretty useless these days (unless you get an extremely low score, which can tell you something is really wrong). That score seems normal, because it's heavily CPU dependent with modern mid/high end GPUs. Run an actual game, or a benchmark of an actual game, and see if the performance is what you'd expect (after all, I'm sure you got this card for gaming and not benchmarking).

P.S. - if you really want to improve your 3dmark score for whatever reason, OC your CPU. It'll help considerably.

edit: I just searched their results browser for similar configurations. Your score's completely normal. (link)

ATI have been known to rest on there laurels too much when they are doing well, think 9800-x800 x1900-2900 for examples

WHAT??? Does your post have something to do with the current thread? Or you just felt like sharing this nonsense here?

use 8.7 + ati tray tools for oc, 8.7 is still the fastest drivers I've used

Is that quad at stock or overclocked? If it is on stock then you are getting the right score, because ATI cards have crappy scores in 3dmark 2006. My 4870 gets the same number of points that I got with my old 8800 GT. The difference in games however, is very big.

Use 3dmark vantage from now on, if you like synthetic gpu benchmarks.

OCing the card will help a little, but not nearly as much as OCing the CPU (as far as 3dmark06 scores are concerned).

agreed .. OC your CPU if you want a higher score; 12K is about right for a 3.2Ghz CPU and 4870/512.
but don't say "FPS is low" unless it IS low in gaming

Play games and run FRAPS to see what frame rate you are getting. At 19x12 the 4870 starts to run out of gas, so do not expect full details and max filtering

I have the same problem as you,I get very low FPS in game, I get no more than 40 FPS in UT3(on containment map) on all high at 1280x1024 whereas my friend with lesser hardware(AMD X2 4600 and a Nvidia 9600GSO) get way better FPS than me and he runs at a higher res 1600x1200.....there is an increasing problem with the 4870s but im using the Diamond Radeon HD 4870...wut one do u have?

i forgot to tell you

Frame rates are *capped* to 60 or 62 as an absolute max in Ut3
- some of the benches fail to uncap it with the latest game patch

you might need to edit the ini [or config] files to unlock it; but i think you also had other problems with it and are going to RMA it; good luck!

i forgot to mention, in counter strike source i was getting about the same fps as my 3850, getting lower than 60 fps in some cases.
