4870 512 + 4870 1gb crossfire together?

it works fine

i reviewed it with a dozen game benchmarks back in September
- the only issues are with a few games that require more than 512MB vRAM
[PT boats to be released this Q2 is one of them]

CrossFireX does not work exactly as most of us expect
- i am getting great results with overclocked 4870(800/1050) + 4890(950/1050)

Should work, but only really recommended if...

1. You already have both cards, or
2. You already have a 4870 and want to spend less than $100 for better performance or
3. You already have a 4850, want to go 2x4870, but can't afford it yet.

The difference between 2x4850 and mixed cards looks negligable, not really worth spending the extra money buying a new 4870 to pair up with an existing 4850.

he has 4870-512 and is considering the 1GB of [also] 4870
- there are no issues - it is as fast as regular 4870-1GB CF - except where the 512MB vRAM is an issue - which is rare.

Thanks for the link to that article. I've been toying with the idea of picking up another 4850 and now that they're under $90 I guess there's really no reason not too.

reading comprehension on a sunday is not my strong point.

Same hardware and results here, much better than I expected. I thought the effective 512 limitation would be more of an issue, but not so much it seems (yet) at 1920 x 1080. I've been on the lookout for increased stuttering due to the 512 MB memory limit, but the significant framerate boost seems to dominate over any slight increase (if any) in stuttering.

I have a few games that don't benefit from crossfire, so the software option to temporarily disable crossfire and get the whole 1 GB from the stronger 4890 card is a very useful and flexible fall-back position.

I know this is obvious to us, but OP what apoppin is saying is that you'll only be able to use 512mb of the vram if you crossfire a 4870 512 with a 1gb card.
