also, i can remember when ati used to destroy nvidia in 3dmarks, but didnt do as good in games, the argument was that we are not playing 3dmarks...but now, all of the sudden even though we are not playing occts and furmarks, the whole ati batch is flawed?

just LOL
Dadach, Keys didn't make a personal attack, he simply asked you to stay on topic. That?s not a personal attack.

Furthermore, since you ignored both my generic and specific warnings to stay on topic and stop baiting, you can have a few days off. Come back when you have something constructive to post that adds value to this thread.

IMHO with all due respect to members and Mods here this thread should be locked, its a flamebait thread.
This thread is a legitimate discussion about a potential flaw with 4870/4890 hardware. The forum administration here doesn?t automatically censor things just because they put ATi in a bad light.

You may disagree with the assertion that ATi parts are faulty, and argue constructively why.

You may share your thoughts on the issue (i.e. whether it affects you, whether you care, etc).

You may even compare nVidia cards with the same test to see if they have the same issues.

Whatever. Just keep it reasonably on topic, use common sense and basic judgement, and stop trying to occlude the issue by attacking the messenger and/or going off topic.

Either address the argument or don?t post in this thread.

I understand people here complaining, it is frustating but oh well there's nothing we can do apparently.

On topic, i don't think it will affect anybody while playing a game otherwise we would be seeing a lot of online threads on this subject. It's just a simple crappy software program that's causing it.

I could just make another thread with the title "Furmark desing flaw?"

I see that only the cards that use the Volterra VRM are prone to have such issue, my card doesn't support VRM monitoring, I'm not even sure if my card has Digital VRM. I'm not affected with that issue, and my overclocking sucks, I can't go above 990MHz on the GPU, but my RAM can run fine at 4GHz.

990 on the core on a 4870!!!! You mean 790?

I can hit 1ghz core on my 4870 @ about 1.35 volts, but VRM temps go through the roof.

Ummm...I think my sarcasmeter is broken? You can't actually run anything at that speed right? I can also set the clocks to 900+ on my card but it isn't stable. The highest 3DMark Vantage stable I got was 875MHz I think.

Shesh, which card do you own? Can you post a newegg link of your card? It's quite unbelieveable. The cooler of my card is much more efficient that the reference one, but I can't quite hit high speeds with it, Overdrive overclocks it to 840MHz, but isn't stable. At 800MHz, most games runs fine, but GRID runs and locks every 20 seconds for 5 seconds, then runs again and locks for 5 seconds, weird behavior. But at 790MHz, everything is rock solid stable except OCCT which only can be run without stability at 750MHz, but the RAM can run at 4GHz without issues.

Among other things ;). Shame only Petra's carries it. I prefer Jabtech and Sidewinder myself, so I've been using Swiftech ramsinks underneath my AC S1 on the VRMs.

I found out over the weekend when I went to clean the heatsink for the first time since I've had the card (nearly a year now) that the VRM ramsinks fell off at some point, onto the AC S1. Whoops...

I'm kind of curious how Zalman's new ZM-RHS70 VRM heatsink does compared to yours.

Hehe, gots ta keep myself busy in my spare time :D

Sidewinder stocked them for a while, Gary never conctacted me to restock though. I really like Sidewinder, I just deal with Petra's mostly as a matter of habit.

That's pretty scary you lost your VRM sinks... this is definitely not a card that should go without cooling there.

I think the Zalman sink would definitely outperform mine, but either would overheat with inadequate airflow. Dead spots in case airflow make for dead cards.

When I had my 4870 1GB (reference model), I did not have these crashing issues but I never ran OCCT on it either (can't anymore since it's gone!!! :D). But the card did run at 99c gpu core, ~114-117c on the VDDC temps, and 119c on the vram while gaming for hours without any stability issues, albeit sounding like a jet engine.
