i just got a few 486's and like 5 386's i believe...i was wondering if a 486 is fast enought to put linux on, i just want to mess around with it and learn some basics nothing serious..i have redhat linux 7.1.

Personally I don't think it's worth it, but you might as well give it a try. I put Mandrake 7.1 on a p133 and it was slow as hell (worse than win98 on the same box). You could try an older version though.

sure it's fast enough to run linux.. don't expect much from a GUI though.. if you want to learn linux, the command line is the way to go (you should probably pick up a book to help you along).

Yeah it'll run a command shell fine, just stay away from the GUIs. I wouldn't try compiling or compressing anything on it either though.

You might wanna try one of those old Intel overdrive processors. You can find them for like 10 bucks on some of the auction sites.
